{"id":3597,"date":"2017-08-28T10:00:09","date_gmt":"2017-08-28T09:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.exeter.ac.uk\/accommodation\/?p=3597"},"modified":"2017-08-28T10:00:09","modified_gmt":"2017-08-28T09:00:09","slug":"registering-with-a-gp-in-exeter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/accommodation\/registering-with-a-gp-in-exeter\/","title":{"rendered":"Registering with a GP in Exeter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Our Accommodation Blog today is brought to us by guest-blogger, Helen Anderson from the Residence Life Team&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I remember the first time I was ill when I started living on my own.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be honest: it wasn\u2019t much fun.<\/p>\n<p>At home, my mum would have brought me cups of tea, and made sure I had anything else I needed like painkillers, honey and lemon, or hot water bottles. Now I had to sort those things out for myself, only\u2026 I was ill. And I didn\u2019t have the things. And I <em>really<\/em> didn\u2019t want to go out for them (or move at all, to be honest). Luckily I was able to phone a friend and plaintively ask her to go to the shop for me, but that\u2019s how I learned my first tip: keep a few basic health supplies in your room.<\/p>\n<p>Other things to think about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s a good idea to register with a GP in Exeter as soon as possible. It\u2019s <em>much<\/em> better to do it before you actually need to see a doctor, because if you\u2019re feeling unwell the last thing you\u2019ll want to deal with is a pile of paperwork. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeterstudenthealthcentre.co.uk\/\">Student Health Centre<\/a> is located on the Streatham campus, and you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusdoctor.org.uk\/exeter\/reg.html\">register online<\/a> before you arrive. (Do it now!) If you\u2019ll be based at Rowancroft, we recommend registering with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theheavitreepractice.co.uk\/\">Heavitree Practice<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Student Health Centre recommends <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expertselfcare.com\/\">Expert Self Care<\/a>, a free app providing health advice for students available for Android and Apple devices. For more information visit the website or search for \u2018Expert Self-Care &#8211; Student\u2019 in app stores.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Health Centre also recommends you make sure you\u2019ve had the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/Conditions\/vaccinations\/Pages\/men-acwy-vaccine.aspx\">Meningitis ACWY<\/a> vaccine before you come to uni. As a Fresher you\u2019ll have the opportunity to meet tons of new people, which can be really fun and exciting but does also put you at higher risk of infection, so it\u2019s best to protect yourself. If you haven\u2019t had this vaccination, or are unsure, check with your GP. (If it\u2019s not possible to get the vaccination before you come, the NHS recommend you should have it as soon as possible after you arrive.)<\/li>\n<li>Finally, don\u2019t forget to look after yourself! <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/accommodation\/students\/prospectivestudents\/arrivals\/\">Freshers\u2019 Week<\/a>, in particular, can be pretty hectic and it\u2019s easy to let good habits slip a bit \u2013 but your health will thank you if you remember to stay hydrated, get some exercise, and eat the occasional vegetable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Realistically, you\u2019ll probably feel a bit under the weather at some point during your year in residence, but if you follow these tips you should be well prepared!<\/p>\n<p><em>Residence Life Helen<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Accommodation Blog today is brought to us by guest-blogger, Helen Anderson from the Residence Life Team&#8230;
