Before reading this blog post, I suggest you do so on a full stomach because once you have finished you are definitely going to feel peckish!
This Friday (31 January 2014) marks the Chinese New Year and 2014 is the year of the horse. If you are currently in catered accommodation then your residences are really taking the reins (pardon the pun) on providing you all with a Chinese themed celebration to ring in the New Year. Students who are in self-catered accommodation do not have to miss out either because they can come along with their student card and pay £6.42 for this sumptious treat.
Friday’s menu looks utterly delightful and you can tickle your tastebuds with some of the below (warning – too much salivating over your computer keyboard will make for a messy clean up later):
Hua Sheng Ji Ding (Peanut Chilli Chicken) Whole chicken legs with roasted peanuts in a sweet spicy chilli sauce
Jiang Cong Niu Rou (Ginger and Spring Onion Beef) Beef in a black bean sauce with fresh ginger and spring onion
Yao Guo Chao Cai (Stir Fried Cashew Vegetables) Vegetables in a sticky sweet sauce topped with roasted cashews (V)
Chun Juan (Vegetable Spring Rolls) Crispy rolls filled with vegetables and served with sweet chilli sauce (V)
Also being served are: fortune crackers, fried rice, noodles, prawn crackers, stir-fried beansprouts and pak choi. For dessert they are offering: mandarin cheesecake, tropical fruit salad or cold coconut rice pudding (yummy!)
It’s not all about the food because there are also some great things going on around Exeter and the Streatham campus over the next couple of weeks to celebrate the Chinese New Year. From fireworks to dancing dragons and lions, there is certainly something for everyone. For more information please visit our events on campus page to check out the times and days of the various events taking place.
I’m very nearly done talking about food but not quite because this week it is also Farmhouse Breakfast Week and catered residences are also being egged on (wow, my jokes [yolks] are just wonderful today) to provide you all with some extra tasty breakfast treats. You will be able to see some extra breakfast items available until 31 January including: fruit compote, maple syrup and mixed spices to add to your porridge plus a fresh fruit platter. Self catered students can also take part by paying £3.75 with your Student card.
See, I told you it was a foody one this week! I will also mention on a non-food subject that there are still lots of private sector accommodation available for 2014/15 returners and you can see what is on offer by visiting Exeter Studentpad.
