Following the success of the Students’ Guild Accommodation Fair yesterday, we were able to see what students are currently thinking about in regard to accommodation for next year. We have the answers you need here:
Any rooms still available?
At midnight yesterday (21 November) our StudentPad list of advertisements for 2018/19 went live with over 120 adverts. Do keep checking StudentPad from 28 November onwards for any new listings which may be added. There is still plenty of time and availability despite whispers of “Exeter has run out of accommodation”.
The next Flatmate finder event being run through the Guild will take place on Wednesday 29 November between 6:30pm – 8:30pm in Pieminister.
Advice from a current student…
We caught up with second year Psychology student, Poppy Barr who features on our ‘private housing’ video to pass on her advice on looking for accommodation. Here’s what she has to say:
“When you’re still settling in to your first year at university, the idea of organising second year accommodation, and who to live with, can feel incredibly daunting. In my first year, I was fortunate enough to find a great group of friends and we knew we wanted to look for a house together fairly early on. However, it isn’t always so easy deciding who to live with.
My biggest piece of advice is to be honest about who you’re happy living with, because at the end of the day, you’re going to have to live with them for an entire year. Make sure you openly discuss second year housing arrangements with your friends so that everyone knows what is going on and you’re all on the same page. That being said, be willing to compromise and make sure you’re kind to others. If you know someone who is struggling to find someone to live with, and you’re yet to find a house with your friends, invite them to be part of your group (after discussing it with your friends, of course!).
Finally, be realistic about the number of people you’re planning to live with. While the idea of living with the 11 people from your halls might seem great now, finding a 12 bedroom house may be difficult and dealing with 11 people’s washing up for another year might not be so fun! Try to split into smaller groups where you can, and you can always discuss where to live together so that you choose houses close by.”
Join the Residence Life Team
Recruitment has started for September 2018 and if you wish to be considered to become a Residence Life Team Mentor then please submit your application by Wednesday 29 November. As a Mentor you would be responsible for welcoming and supporting a group of students living in University accommodation, helping them to have a positive experience, and empowering them to resolve any problems. You would receive the following benefits:
- A room in University accommodation, and a rent discount of £45 a week (discount applies for 32 weeks).
- Full training and the chance to develop new skills.
- Experience of working with people.
- The opportunity to develop confidence in dealing with a range of different situations.

Essential Building Works Drop-In
Those students who are living within affected blocks in Lafrowda or Birks Grange Village then please note the next student drop-in session will take place on Thursday 30 November between 1:30-2:30pm in Forum Seminar Room 8. There won’t be a drop-in during December and we will notify you in January of the next session.
