The leaves are changing colour and there’s a chill in the air – Autumn is well and truly with us. Today’s blog looks at the things to be celebrated and events to get involved in at this time of year.
Clock Changes
On 30th October at 2am, the clocks in the UK go back an hour to return to Greenwich Mean Time. The important thing to know is that we get an extra hour in bed! Plus more daylight over the Autumn and Winter seasons. Your electronic devices should alter automatically, so hopefully you won’t get caught out. You can find out more about the origins of this British tradition in this online article.
Halloween
When October comes around, many people think about Halloween, a tradition which is said to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. If you’re heading to a party this year, take a look at these tips to help your night go smoothly:
- Looking for inspiration for a costume? Here are some ideas based on popular Netflix TV series.
- Organise how you’ll get home before you leave for the party, then you can relax knowing that you have a safe plan. Take a look at the local bus timetables or perhaps you can club together with friends and pre-book a taxi back to campus.
- If you do find yourself having to walk on the campus after dark, follow the Safer Walking Routes and download the SafeZone app, allowing you to share your location instantly with Estate Patrol should you need help or guidance.
Get Involved

- Treat yourself and forget the trick! This week you’ll find Halloween deals in the Ram Bar and delicious pumpkin spiced lattes at Barisca outlets. Go ahead and enjoy a taste of the season.
- Many of the Students’ Guild Societies have Halloween themed events running this week, from baking to fundraising – take a look.
So enjoy that extra hour over the weekend and we’ll be back next week with our latest blog.
