It is that time of year where some lucky students will have already finished their exams and are thinking about heading home to start their summer vacation nice and early. If you are returning your room keys earlier than the contract end date (you can see your contract at any time by visiting your accommodation account) then please be aware that you will not receive any refunds on your accommodation fees for deciding to leave early. If you are moving out of your accommodation early, please make sure you have read the moving out pages of our website which provides a useful checklist on what you need to do prior to your departure to ensure it all goes smooothly. Check with your residence reception where to leave your keys if you are departing outside of office hours because this can vary from residence to residence.
Those of you who are departing early please bear in mind that we have two open days coming up on both Friday 5 and Saturday 6 June which could potentially make it difficult to get to your residence to load a car between 10:00am-5:00pm.
If you have acquired a number of items which you no longer need then why not consider donating them? The British Heart Foundation (BHF) shops have partnered with the University of Exeter for the second year to launch a scheme to encourage students to donate their unwanted items and help generate vital stock. The profits raised will go towards the fight for every heartbeat and help to fund the BHF’s life-saving research.
Through the ‘Moving On‘ scheme, the BHF have provided 7 donation banks and 32 donation boxes, which will mean that students can donate close to their accommodation. To make the campaign a success, the University of Exeter is urging both students and staff to raid their wardrobes and household goods and donate any items that they no longer need. BHF shops are always in need of clothing, shoes, accessories, CDs, DVDs, books, kitchen ware and small electricals, such as hair-dryers and hair-straighteners.
Last year the University raised over £33,000 and donated 19 tonnes of goods to the BHF. If you wanted to be part of this year’s successful Moving On project then look out for the posters and flyers in your university residence or visit your residence reception for a bag and details of where the nearest donation point is.
For those students who are staying on campus over the summer or staying in summer accommodation and are looking for work, there are a number of casual positions available within our residences for students wishing to work flexibly between 8 June – 13 September. If you have experience in housekeeping then why not consider the ‘Casual Domestic Supervisor’ role or maybe you are passionate about customer service and would rather consider our ‘Casual Domestic and Catering Assistants’ role then why not work for the university this summer? Details are available on our website and Sunday 24 May is the closing date for applications.
Are you currently living in private housing? We have recently been made aware of a useful video created by the West Midlands Police advising students how they can keep their belongings safe whilst living within the private sector. Make sure you take a look because just by watching it you could save yourself from becoming a victim of crime. If you have concerns about the area that you are currently living in then there are Community Wardens available to help.
