Dartington Workshop and Training: Feb 2026

AdvanTip is delighted to be coordinating two events in Dartington Hall, Devon during 16-20th Feb 2026:

  • Workshop: Advancing Early Warning Methods (16th-midday 18th February 2026)
  • Training Session: Statistics of Early Warnings (midday 18th-20th February 2026)

The first event is a “Deep Dive” research workshop where we will be discussing state-of-the-art and open problems in early warnings of critical transitions/tipping points. The aim is to improve methods of early warning of tipping points. We invite ‘show and tell’ contributions that share progress, including initial results, new approaches to generic or system-specific early warning, and improvements to existing approaches e.g. their statistical robustness. There will be opportunities to advance early warning methods together, including better linking process-based modelling, statistical, and deep learning approaches to early warning, improving the statistical skill and robustness of early warning signals, and to identifying stretch goals such as predicting time to tipping. The aims are to come up and exchange new ideas, as well as forming new collaborations to tackle them.

The second event is a training session that aims to give an understanding of the theory and practice of early warnings of critical transitions/tipping points. It is mandatory for ARIA FTP PhD students. ARIA FTP Early Career Scientists are invited to attend as are other ECRs with research interests aligned to the FTP, and we will do what we can to accommodate interested researchers. We plan to make the training accessible to researchers from a wide range of backgrounds.

Note that there is separate registration for each event: you can choose to register for one or other events.
