{"id":1889,"date":"2025-11-07T10:21:53","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T10:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/?p=1889"},"modified":"2025-11-12T09:12:28","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T09:12:28","slug":"alumni-duo-drive-ambulance-to-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/2025\/11\/07\/alumni-duo-drive-ambulance-to-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni\u00a0duo\u00a0drive\u00a0ambulance to Ukraine\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Earlier this autumn alumni duo Bob Budge\u00a0(Politics and Economics,\u00a01971)\u00a0and Jonathan Callaway\u00a0(German,\u00a01971) took their Exeter friendship on the road to drive an\u00a0aid-filled\u00a0ambulance in a convoy to Ukraine\u00a0to\u00a0assist\u00a0with humanitarian\u00a0efforts.\u00a0We caught up with them both to find out more about what the trip involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alumni\u00a0Bob and Jonathan\u00a0met\u00a0for the first time\u00a0in October 1968\u00a0and lived together in their first year at the University of Exeter before moving\u00a0to\u00a0Duryard\u00a0halls for the\u00a0remainder\u00a0of their Exeter days, and during this trip they shared a room, just like at university.\u00a0They enjoyed careers in banking and finance respectively and are\u00a0both\u00a0retired now.\u00a0During their retirement,\u00a0Jonathan and Bob\u00a0reconnected,\u00a0after 50 years, through a friend (who has since sadly passed away) and\u00a0after\u00a0the\u00a0reunion\u00a0the duo\u00a0have\u00a0been close friends once again.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since&nbsp;the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 the demand for humanitarian aid, civil defence support and medical supplies&nbsp;has been&nbsp;unrelenting, and a desire to make some small impact drove Bob and Jonathan to take part in this ambulance&nbsp;expedition&nbsp;in 2025&nbsp;(for the second time for Jonathan).&nbsp;The convoy that Bob and&nbsp;Jonathan were involved in featured&nbsp;ambulances&nbsp;for&nbsp;hospitals&nbsp;and&nbsp;equipment&nbsp;to reach&nbsp;civilians&nbsp;trapped under&nbsp;collapsed&nbsp;buildings. As well as&nbsp;aid delivery with vehicles arrive in Ukraine filled with medical and other aid including dressings and medical tools, defibrillators, generators, clothes, blankets. Even toys for displaced children and food for rescue dogs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill\" style=\"grid-template-columns:44% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2025\/11\/5-1.png);background-position:50% 50%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"930\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2025\/11\/5-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1901 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2025\/11\/5-1.png 930w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2025\/11\/5-1-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2025\/11\/5-1-768x413.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 930px) 100vw, 930px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Their\u00a0journey\u00a0began with an early start at 4.30am on Sunday 7 September and by the end of the day the convoy were through France, Belgium, Holland and just into Germany where\u00a0they\u00a0stayed the night. The next day the group travelled through Germany to the Polish borders and by the end of Tuesday they were at the Poland\/Ukraine border.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The convoy was originally five vehicles, the fifth being a mobile operating theatre. Unfortunately, in Belgium an engine mount&nbsp;collapsed&nbsp;and with the new clutch also slipping as a result&nbsp;they&nbsp;had to abandon&nbsp;it&nbsp;at the roadside. The vehicle is now being repaired and will follow&nbsp;later. The four remaining vehicles&nbsp;comprised&nbsp;a rapid response vehicle and then there were three ambulances all differently configured for&nbsp;different needs. All ambulances were full of donated medical supplies, and the ambulance that Bob and Jonathan drove was number two in the convoy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Wednesday morning the group had driven 1,200 miles and were ready to cross the border into Lviv.&nbsp;The previous night had seen&nbsp;a&nbsp;drone incursion into Poland so there was some concern.&nbsp;Bob&nbsp;explained, \u201c<em>Lviv&nbsp;is only 60 miles over the border and had&nbsp;seen&nbsp;little damage and all convoys to date had&nbsp;been fine, so all agreed to continue.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>They&nbsp;reached&nbsp;their&nbsp;destination on the outskirts of Lviv&nbsp;by early afternoon having had to wait at the border and go through security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 49%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Before the vehicle\u00a0handover\u00a0in the\u00a0evening,\u00a0the\u00a0group\u00a0had a few hours downtime and managed a trip into the beautiful and historic centre of Lviv\u00a0which reflected the duality of the lived current experience of its citizens. Jonathan and Bob visited the\u00a0\u2018Church of Tears\u2019 (the Church of the Most Holy Apostles Peter and Paul), where hundreds of fallen soldiers and civilians were commemorated. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2025\/11\/4-1.png);background-position:50% 50%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"930\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2025\/11\/4-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1903 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2025\/11\/4-1.png 930w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2025\/11\/4-1-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2025\/11\/4-1-768x413.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 930px) 100vw, 930px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This was really the first big emotional roller coaster moment of the trip and to them both it was\u00a0<em>\u201ca vivid reminder of the\u00a0seemingly never-ending\u00a0toll this war is taking on the country and its people.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0There is a\u00a0\u2018Church of Tears\u2019\u00a0in every town and village, which Bob added<em>\u00a0\u201cbrings home the futility of war.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0travel\u00a0to Ukraine was long\u00a0and tiring for both alums,\u00a0but Jonathan\u00a0shares, &#8220;<em>that\u00a0was as nothing to the emotions we felt when handing our four ambulances over to the hospitals and search\u00a0and\u00a0rescue teams who will be using them. Each recipient sent a small deputation to show appreciation and to give them a day of R&amp;R. There\u00a0was\u00a0a formal dinner\u00a0with the Lviv MP and medics etc,\u00a0and speeches.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One team had come straight from Dnipro region, near the front line. They&nbsp;picked up their 4WD search&nbsp;and&nbsp;rescue vehicle (which came with hydraulic cutting tools used to extract people from damaged buildings) and drove it straight back after one of the first responders had told&nbsp;the&nbsp;drivers&nbsp;of what they&nbsp;dealt&nbsp;with&nbsp;every&nbsp;day. The ambulance&nbsp;Bob and Jonathan&nbsp;drove will be used by a rehabilitation centre for wounded veterans. Another of the vehicles went to a hospital that specialises in treating limb loss injuries. That hospital alone has treated more than 18,000 victims to date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on the journey,\u00a0Jonathan\u00a0highlighted that it was a\u00a0<em>\u201cphysically tiring but emotionally powerful experience for all of us drivers.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Bob added,\u00a0<em>\u201cFor me I am so glad I did this\u00a0trip. Driving\u00a0was intense as we needed to stay tight as a convoy on\u00a0busy\u00a0roads and there were\u00a0strong\u00a0emotional highs and lows\u00a0to\u00a0manage.
