Narrowing down A-level choices can be tricky but it was alumnus Jacob Evans\u2019\u00a0(Geography with European Study, 2021) decision to choose Geography that not only\u00a0led\u00a0to\u00a0his studies at the University of Exeter but\u00a0was a stepping stone to his working as a journalist at the BBC World Service. We caught up\u00a0with Jacob to map out his career so far.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jacob\u00a0was drawn to\u00a0Geography\u00a0as\u00a0it existed at the crossroads\u00a0of his interests:\u00a0science, people,\u00a0cultures\u00a0and global politics.\u00a0So, how did the jump to\u00a0journalism\u00a0happen?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up two of his favourite shows were Top Gear<\/em> and Ross Kemp: Extreme World<\/em>. Jacob shares, \u201cI\u2019ve always loved documentaries and travelling and meeting people from different places and I thought this would be a good career path for that.\u201d <\/em>This merged with what he enjoyed about Geography, \u201cthat we look out of a window or up at the sky and say, \u2018why is that there?\u2019 or \u2018how did that happen\u2019. I\u2019ve always felt the same about other topics such as conflict or natural disasters: \u2018Why? How? Who?\u2019\u201d<\/em> Jacob’s constant quest for answering these questions (about pretty much anything he\u2019s ever seen) led him to carve out his career path in the sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plenty of tributaries\u00a0also\u00a0flowed together to create the\u00a0direction\u00a0that the river of his life has taken\u00a0to date.\u00a0Acting as\u00a0reminder of how\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0all a sum of our\u00a0choices,\u00a0experiences\u00a0and\u00a0interests. For instance,\u00a0his\u00a0time at Exeter\u00a0allowed Jacob to\u00a0\u201cbe nerdy about the things\u00a0[he]\u00a0liked\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and explore topics of interest\u00a0critically with\u00a0clear evidence\u00a0and sourcing.\u00a0He credits the\u00a0academic rigour developed during this\u00a0university\u00a0chapter\u00a0as integral to shaping his\u00a0career since and\u00a0recollects\u00a0that the\u00a0study\u00a0of climate change played a huge role.\u00a0Noting,\u00a0\u201cNot just what climate change is, but the consequences already facing communities around the world and solutions being drawn up.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During\u00a0his second year\u00a0at Exeter,\u00a0Jacob took part in a field trip to Brazil,\u00a0and this along with\u00a0his ERASMUS year at the University of Helsinki (pictured left<\/em>) have had lasting impacts on him personally and in his career.\u00a0These experiences have allowed\u00a0him to flourish in\u00a0several key\u00a0parts\u00a0of his work:\u00a0travel,\u00a0communicating with people from\u00a0different parts\u00a0of the globe, and\u00a0being\u00a0able to balance working both\u00a0independently\u00a0and\u00a0in\u00a0diverse groups.\u00a0Jacob notes,\u00a0\u201cThese are all vital skills I\u00a0picked up on\u00a0my year abroad and at Exeter too.”<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

After graduating\u00a0from Exeter\u00a0Jacob pursued\u00a0a master\u2019s in TV Journalism at\u00a0City St George’s, University of London\u00a0followed by\u00a0a two-year graduate apprenticeship with the BBC before starting full time at the World Service\u00a0as a journalist.\u00a0A job which has seen him\u00a0travel around the world\u00a0seeking\u00a0and sharing stories.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We could imagine trying sum up the highlights of his career so far could be a bit like trying to explain your favourite story to a friend in between tube stops so instead wanted to know what moments of his career made him feel surprised, inspired and hopeful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For surprised Jacob recalls, \u201c<\/em>I did a story about surface flooding in London and fully dove into my Geography arsenal once. This story was called \u2018Should London become a sponge city?\u2019 and was all about why London floods so much when it rains and what can be done. My <\/em>online article<\/em><\/a> ended up on the BBC News homepage and was among the top ten stories of the day, with more than a million readers. On social media it gathered huge attention and I even did a package for the TV and radio news. I felt surprised by the interest both at the BBC and among the audience. It was satisfying to see an idea born straight from the library of Exeter translate so well. Additionally, the reaction to this idea has encouraged me to continue tackling questions like this, especially with a solutions-based approach.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On being inspired he shares that being sent to Jerusalem for several weeks <\/strong>was the highlight of his career so far. Noting, \u201cFrom a professional standpoint it was a testing opportunity to be at the forefront of a conflict and aim to help with our coverage. From a personal standpoint, having read and watched so much about the region, being able to see it for yourself was profound. The people I met and the stories I have covered have given me immense inspiration. Their courage and kindness left a lasting impact. I left feeling inspired to be a better journalist.<\/em>\u201d <\/em> <\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With regards to feeling hopeful Jacob returns to his time on the BBC graduate scheme two years ago when he pitched\u00a0the idea of going to\u00a0the One Young World Summit in Montreal to\u00a0produce\u00a0some\u00a0special podcast episodes<\/a>.\u00a0He remembers,\u00a0\u201cThis was a big week-long summit featuring young leaders and change-makers from all over the World to\u00a0showcase\u00a0and discuss how young people are tackling some of our biggest contemporary issues. Hearing their testimonies, perseverance in the face of adversity and sheer drive to make a change to their community was unbelievably inspiring.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking to the future we wondered what types of stories Jacob wants to tell next and where they will take him. He shared, \u201c<\/em><\/strong>I really want to go everywhere. It is incredibly difficult to get access, but I would like to visit and report from the ongoing conflicts in Africa, such as the <\/em>Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/em>, Sudan, or in the Sahel. There are also a lot of climate-related stories I want to pursue in the Pacific. I have a big interest in refugees and migration routes and would like to investigate some of the lesser-known areas such as those trying to get to Mayotte or Yemen. A bit closer to home, I\u2019m interested examining in the cost-of-living on young people including public transport costs and renting.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked if he had any advice, for those feeling at a crossroads in life, current final-year students finding it hard to see the path ahead, or recent graduates feeling a bit lost, Jacob didn\u2019t want to be prescriptive but did want to spotlight some learnings from his own story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Particularly that he did an internship during his degree that was incredibly useful in knowing what he didn\u2019t want to do as much as what he did. Adding, \u201c<\/em>I applied for all these schemes because all my friends were and I thought maybe I should. However, I really didn\u2019t like it. I was bored. As soon as I realised that I would struggle massively doing something I didn\u2019t care about. So, I took a risk. I realised what I liked and what I wanted to do and had to weigh up the pros and cons of the long journey to get there.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo I regret it? No. Was there an easier way? From where I was sat, also no. I knew getting into this career was going to be hard and the first few years extremely challenging. Some of those challenges persist, of course, but I\u2019m doing something I genuinely enjoy. I don\u2019t wake up fearing the day and I am excited about the future. I also get to regularly do things which make me happy. It\u2019s important to remember there\u2019s no set trajectory you should compare yourself to. So, I would say pursue your interests and what gives you purpose. Know that you\u2019re not alone and trust your instincts. Do something that engages and challenges you, as you might have to do it for at least another 40 years.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
