We dove into the inspiration behind his award-winning biopic of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercedesgleitze.uk\/personal-details-and-summary-of-career\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mercedes Gleitze<\/a>, a pioneer in the world of open-water swimming, who in 1927 became the first British woman to swim the English Channel. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a working-class, unmarried typist, Gleitze self-funded all her swims, and it took her eight attempts to conquer the English Channel. Elliott shares:<em> \u201cIt was our aim to really submerge the audience into the waters of the English Channel, and in that way hope to pay homage to the spirit of this\u202fincredible\u202fwoman.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<br><br>We wanted to know more about Elliott\u2019s achievements and inspiration behind this incredible journey and how it poetically mirrored Mercedes\u2019: a love affair with film vs a love affair with the water. &nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Speaking about how he came to make this film Elliott says:<em> \u201cHaving grown up on the coast I\u2019ve always felt a very strong connection to the water. So,\u202fwhen I\u202fstumbled across the story of Mercedes Gleitze, I instantly fell in love with her\u202fremarkable story, and my interest was really piqued by the challenge of filming out in the English Channel. I discovered that Gleitze and I both share the same\u202fhometown of Brighton and were born exactly a century\u202fapart, (her in 1900 and myself in 2000), which made me feel\u202fincredibly\u202fconnected to her right from the outset.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"930\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/5.png 930w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/5-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/5-768x413.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 930px) 100vw, 930px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kirsten Callaghan as Mercedes Gleitze by Relsah Films<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What really sets this film apart is a careful intention and the real stylistic techniques used to capture the struggles of swimming the channel; a feat that to date 4,133\u202fpeople can relate to, thanks to people like Mercedes. Elliott explained more about the methods that were used to achieve this:<em> \u201cEverything you see on screen is real, all shot without the use of tanks, green screens or body doubles, and all swimming scenes were shot in the English Channel. I wanted audiences to feel as if they are swimming right alongside Mercedes.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"930\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-761\" style=\"width:841px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/6.png 930w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/6-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/6-768x413.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 930px) 100vw, 930px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Director Elliott Hasler in the English Channel &#8211; Photographer Stewart Weir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Elliott is now a firm inspiration in the world of film through having the rare ability to tell the intricate story of true inspiration in a going-against-all-odds fashion. When we asked him what he\u2019d like audiences to take away from the film he said: <em>\u201cSimply to be\u202finspired. What Mercedes\u202fachieved, not just with the Channel but also her other swims around the\u202fworld, such as the Strait of Gibraltar, Robben Island to Cape Town and the\u202fDardanelles, where she was the\u202ffirst ever\u202fperson to complete such swims, is truly\u202fextraordinary. Yet at the\u202fheart of it, Mercedes herself was an ordinary, working-class woman who, with sheer grit, determination and\u202fperseverance went out and\u202fachieved her dreams, which is\u202fsomething that is truly inspiring whether you\u2019re in the 1920s or 2020s.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For an\u202findependent film, what\u202f<em>Vindication Swim<\/em> has\u202fachieved,\u202fplaying in more than 300 cinemas\u202fand breaking top 20 at the box office, is extraordinary.<em> <\/em>Displaying his own determination and truly riding the wave of his Cannes Festival debut Elliott lets us know what\u2019s next for the film and his future in film.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"930\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/4.png 930w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/4-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/alumni-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/151\/2024\/08\/4-768x413.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 930px) 100vw, 930px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Elliott by Photographer Janet Brown<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He says:<em> \u201cThe\u202freception\u202fhas been\u202ffantastic and way\u202fbeyond what I expected when I first began work on the film. I think it just shows the power of Mercedes\u2019 story and its propensity for connecting\u202fwith people. I\u2019m currently out in Los Angeles where the debut US screening of\u202f\u2018Vindication Swim\u2019 is taking place and it\u2019s really been all\u202fsystems go since the UK release in March. But I do hope to take stock and celebrate when I have some time later this year.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever proud of our alumni, we wondered how his time at Exeter impacted his career in film. Elliott shares:<em> \u201cI wrote the bulk of the screenplay while at Exeter and I think my time there studying\u202fhistory\u202fwas very helpful given this is a historical, true story. I was able to put my studies to use in crafting a story for the screen, whilst retaining the historical authenticity of Mercedes\u2019 world in 1927. Funnily enough Exeter sent me a copy of Bill Bryson\u2019s \u2018One Summer: America 1927\u2019, when I was first accepted on the programme in 2018, which mentions Mercedes and her English Chanel swim. So, I suppose one could credit Exeter with bringing Mercedes to my attention in the first place!\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are honoured to be able to spotlight Elliott and his achievements and wish him ongoing success with his new venture. His next project has been co-written with Kirsten Callaghan who plays Mercedes in <em>Vindication Swim<\/em>. This one will be a true crime\u202fthriller\u202fset on the south coast of England in the 1930s. Elliot shares:<em> \u201cit\u2019s going to be a much darker turn for my next outing, but one that keeps that\u202fhistoric\u202fsetting.
