But up to 90% of the medicines we consume end up in our wastewater. These pollutants can affect the health of wildlife that are already vulnerable due to climate change, habitat loss, and other types of pollution. They can also contribute to biodiversity loss and drive antimicrobial resistance.\u00a0 In this way, pharmaceutical pollution threatens the long-term sustainability of both our healthcare services and our pharmaceutical industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pharmapollutionhub.org%2F&amp;data=05%7C01%7CMarilyn.Evans%40exeter.ac.uk%7C63331ddbe67e445d197d08dbf04a80e1%7C912a5d77fb984eeeaf321334d8f04a53%7C0%7C0%7C638367975009483087%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=GJMmfUl%2Fw%2B5MYUI1tcPSJVD9gK7ZTbJ6u34VK2JYCDY%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Pharma Pollution Hub<\/a> <\/strong>is a new independent think tank based at the University of Exeter.&nbsp; We<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>bring together thought leaders from across academia, industry, government and the civil sector, to co-develop solutions for reducing the environmental impact of medicines used in UK healthcare, through a <a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pharmapollutionhub.org%2Four-approach&amp;data=05%7C01%7CMarilyn.Evans%40exeter.ac.uk%7C63331ddbe67e445d197d08dbf04a80e1%7C912a5d77fb984eeeaf321334d8f04a53%7C0%7C0%7C638367975009494605%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=ddoufBbqT3wrFMkHqHPUao%2FcvESKD5guUm4HnsS7QMg%3D&amp;reserved=0\">systems thinking<\/a> and engaged research approach.&nbsp; Our work spans the whole of the pharmaceutical <a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pharmapollutionhub.org%2Four-scope&amp;data=05%7C01%7CMarilyn.Evans%40exeter.ac.uk%7C63331ddbe67e445d197d08dbf04a80e1%7C912a5d77fb984eeeaf321334d8f04a53%7C0%7C0%7C638367975009499277%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=2eM8Cro0%2FQsvHUPXOmlAiY4RRrN%2BX0PhmH236EDZ0WM%3D&amp;reserved=0\">life cycle<\/a>, including population health and culture, pharmaceutical design and manufacture, healthcare decision-making and use, and environmental monitoring and management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pharmapollutionhub.org%2Fconsortium&amp;data=05%7C01%7CMarilyn.Evans%40exeter.ac.uk%7C63331ddbe67e445d197d08dbf04a80e1%7C912a5d77fb984eeeaf321334d8f04a53%7C0%7C0%7C638367975009503712%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=EPDO0FkQTNOnJcDmXFREwvD4blT0HND%2FYkv366sZt%2BQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Consortium<\/a> brings together stakeholders from across industry, government, academia and the civil sector, and together we are developing a UK Roadmap for Action in reducing the environmental impacts of medicines used in UK healthcare.&nbsp;
