{"id":1035,"date":"2020-05-04T12:28:08","date_gmt":"2020-05-04T12:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/bioresilience\/?p=1035"},"modified":"2020-05-04T12:28:08","modified_gmt":"2020-05-04T12:28:08","slug":"developing-an-animation-to-communicate-science-in-colombia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/bioresilience\/2020\/05\/04\/developing-an-animation-to-communicate-science-in-colombia\/","title":{"rendered":"Developing an animation to communicate science in Colombia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Researchers from the Colombia BioResilience project have been working with an artist\/writer to develop an animation that communicates information about the physical and social science from the BioResilience project and about a short story written about forest conservation in Colombia.\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lpt_ZjKzI8E\">animation<\/a> will be presented at the Hay Festival on the 24th May 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Across an elevation and vegetation gradient in Colombia, researchers from the BioResilience project have been sampling mud from the bottom of lakes to determine how forest vegetation and fire regimes have changed over time and when humans first began to modify the landscape. Ecologists from the project are studying the vegetation and soils to determine how environmental variation such as climate, soil fertility, and forest disturbance by fire and logging change the structure and composition of forests. Human geographers are working with rural inhabitants to understand how they interact with and make use of the forests around their homes. To develop the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lpt_ZjKzI8E\">animation<\/a>, the BioResilience team have been working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chrishaughton.com\/\">Chris Haughton<\/a>, artist and writer, to give input on the animation story, text, and graphics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1037 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/bioresilience\/files\/2020\/05\/Screenshot-2020-05-04-at-17.49.12-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #808080\">Figure 1: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lpt_ZjKzI8E\">Animation<\/a> being developed for the Hay Festival, 2020 (image credit: Chris Haughton)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The short animation presents the main themes from the BioResilience project, &#8220;palaeoecology&#8221;, &#8220;forest ecology&#8221;, and &#8220;human geography&#8221; and will be presented at the Hay Festival on the 24th May 2020, which this year will be a virtual event due to COVID-19. A video reading of the story was presented at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hayfestival.com\/green-hay\/transmission-ii\/colombia\">Hay Festival in Cartegena<\/a>\u00a0in Jan. 2020 as part of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hayfestival.com\/green-hay\/hay-festival-transmission-ii\">TRANS.MISSION II<\/a>.
