Congratulations to Will, the winner of the Mighty Oak Award 2024! 🏆
All members of the Grounds team took part in our annual Mighty Oak Award knock-out competition which has run for eight months. The competition included questions on horticulture, arboriculture, sports pitch maintenance, health and safety and some unusual statistics in the industry!
The final between Andy and Will was very close but Will won on a question about the alcoholic content of fermented potatoes!
You may notice that the finalists are not wearing the standard Grounds uniform; it is tradition that the finalists wear fancy dress borrowed from Drama. There’s no particular reason for this; it just makes us laugh!
The competition helps improve working relationships, highlights the combined horticultural, arboricultural, and sports pitch knowledge and expertise of the team. It also brings out the very competitive nature of some of the team members!
The award trophy was created in-house from fallen timber on campus, which not only makes it sustainable, personal to the team but also free!
