{"id":708,"date":"2015-02-26T13:52:22","date_gmt":"2015-02-26T12:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.exeter.ac.uk\/buddingnews\/?p=708"},"modified":"2015-02-26T13:52:22","modified_gmt":"2015-02-26T12:52:22","slug":"bird-survey-report-winter-2014-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/buddingnews\/2015\/02\/26\/bird-survey-report-winter-2014-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Bird survey report &#8211; winter 2014-2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The results of the recent bird survey are in. \u00a0The Grounds Department commission two surveys a year which are undertaken by an independent twice a year to document the number and species of birds found on campus. \u00a0This enables us to track the impact of any works being undertaken. \u00a0The surveys are taken on two dates, one early in the season, one later on.<\/p>\n<p>As in previous surveys, the Wood Pigeon proved to be our most common bird on Streatham campus: \u00a0The top 5 birds were as follows:<\/p>\n<p>1: Wood pigeon<br \/>\n2: Robin<br \/>\n3: Blackbird<br \/>\n4: Blue tit<br \/>\n5: Carrion Crow<\/p>\n<p>There were a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/discoverandenjoynature\/discoverandlearn\/birdguide\/status_explained.aspx\">red and amber<\/a> listed birds observed on campus:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/discoverandenjoynature\/discoverandlearn\/birdguide\/name\/R\/Redwing\/index.aspx\">Redwings<\/a> were found on both visits, although in much greater number earlier in the season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/discoverandenjoynature\/discoverandlearn\/birdguide\/name\/s\/songthrush\/\">Song Thrush<\/a> were found widely distributed over campus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/discoverandenjoynature\/discoverandlearn\/birdguide\/name\/b\/bullfinch\/\">Bullfinch<\/a> numbers were much higher than 13\/14.<\/p>\n<p>The secretive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/discoverandenjoynature\/discoverandlearn\/birdguide\/name\/d\/dunnock\/\">Dunnock <\/a>was found in reasonable numbers on both visits.<\/p>\n<p>A Grey Heron was seen for the first time on campus (you heard about it on <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.exeter.ac.uk\/buddingnews\/2015\/01\/15\/heron-at-reed\/\">Budding News<\/a>\u00a0first, of course!) \u00a0Also, since the bird survey was taken, a Kingfisher has been spotted on campus.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of the birds are found on the outer edges of campus and in our woodland areas.<\/p>\n<p>The survey is also taken at St. Luke&#8217;s, although due to the size of the campus, many fewer birds are observed. \u00a0The most common birds sighted over there included Herring Gull, Blackbird, Blue Tit, Robin and Goldfinch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The results of the recent bird survey are in. \u00a0The Grounds Department commission two surveys a year which are undertaken by an independent twice a [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[93],"tags":[385,399,403,1645],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.0 -
