{"id":963,"date":"2015-07-08T11:21:10","date_gmt":"2015-07-08T10:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.exeter.ac.uk\/buddingnews\/?p=963"},"modified":"2015-07-08T11:21:10","modified_gmt":"2015-07-08T10:21:10","slug":"dogs-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/buddingnews\/2015\/07\/08\/dogs-on-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Dogs on campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Exeter grounds and estate are private property.\u00a0 We are, however, currently pleased to be able to grant the public permitted access.<\/p>\n<p>This arrangement is extended to permit visitors to bring their dogs with them onto campus.\u00a0 This is on the clear understanding that:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Dogs are kept on leads in all areas on campus<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Owners remove any mess the dogs may create when visiting our campuses<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The open spaces that the University maintains have National Botanic Garden status and are recognised as amongst the highest quality of any UK university.\u00a0 They remain primarily a resource for students and staff but we are happy to share these with visitors and locals who respect the grounds and the access restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Some of our students are nervous around dogs.\u00a0 There is extensive biodiversity on campus and dogs off leads, even when well trained, have potential to disrupt wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>It is also well established that there is a link between dog faeces and infections such as Toxicara, which can lead to blindness.<\/p>\n<p>The University will be promoting, in conjunction with Keep Britain Tidy and Dog\u2019s Trust the \u2018Be a Scooperhero\u2019 campaign to recognise those who already lift, bag and bin dog faeces and encourage others to appreciate the impact if they do not.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/buddingnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/303\/2015\/07\/Poo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-964\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/buddingnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/303\/2015\/07\/Poo.jpg\" alt=\"Poo\" width=\"960\" height=\"915\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/buddingnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/303\/2015\/07\/Poo.jpg 960w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/buddingnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/303\/2015\/07\/Poo-300x286.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/buddingnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/303\/2015\/07\/Poo-768x732.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The University can ban dog owners from its campuses and report regular offenders to the Local Authority who can issue fines.\u00a0 We hope this will continue to be a rare occurrence.\u00a0 We do, however, reserve the right to ban all dogs from campus if we feel risks are not managed.<\/p>\n<p>We would like to take this opportunity to remind all dog owners who wish to enjoy the grounds with their dogs that they should be a \u2018Scooperhero\u2019 and:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Keep dogs on a lead<\/li>\n<li>Bring bags with you when you set off on your walk<\/li>\n<li>Bag the mess, if your dog has fouled<\/li>\n<li>Bin the bag<\/li>\n<li>Clean your hands<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Thanks to all the dog owners who are already \u2018Scooperheroes\u2019 when they visit the University of Exeter grounds.\u00a0 We hope we can continue to welcome you and your dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Iain Park<\/p>\n<p>Director of Grounds<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Exeter grounds and estate are private property.\u00a0 We are, however, currently pleased to be able to grant the public permitted access.
