Our\u00a0MA Theatre Practice<\/a>\u00a0cohort has just completed their annual residency at the\u00a0Shakespeare\u2019s Globe<\/a>\u00a0theatre in London!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every summer, our MATP students conclude the intensive movement, voice, acting and devising training we offer here in Exeter with a week-long residency at this prestigious theatre in London\u2014a residency that is part of a longterm partnership between Exeter Drama and The Globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our MAs participate in workshops and masterclasses in acting, movement and voice and for Shakespeare, clowning, and stage combat. They also take lectures, are offered backstage tours, attend one of the shows, and have a Q&A with one of the theatre\u2019s directors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having just returned from The Globe, our MAs said of their experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSpending a week at Shakespeare’s Globe was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The workshops were inspiring, challenging, and incredibly rewarding, giving me a completely new perspective on Shakespeare, character work, voice, and performance. Learning from such talented industry professionals was a real privilege, and performing on the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse stage itself was a true \u2018pinch me\u2019 moment. I am so grateful to University of Exeter for giving us such an amazing opportunity \u2014 it is an experience I will never forget.\u201d \u2013 Beth MacDonald<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI immersed myself completely in the full range of performance disciplines: voice, stage combat, movement, acting. It definitely was a transforming experience for me and will always cherish this.\u201d – Shree Shravan Balaji Chetty<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn each course, I was taught different skills and got new knowledge. I really like the quote from Albert Einstein that the Course Director mentioned in class: \u2018Once you stop learning, you start dying.\u2019 I think it’s so true. I will apply the knowledge and methods I have learned at The Globe to the creation of my graduation project.\u201d \u2013 Ye Wang<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, our MAs were joined by some of our Ph.D. students<\/a> with research interests in Early Modern Drama, actor training and performance. They shared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Globe residency was remarkable, and absolutely exceeded all expectations.  The instructors were extraordinary, with decades of professional experience and incredible depth of knowledge.  Even as an academic, rather than an actor, I found this an incredibly valuable experience.  This was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my time at Exeter.\u201d \u2013 Dylan McCorquodale<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe course felt like much longer than a week, because it was so insightful and I grew immensely in my understanding of Shakespeare and of acting. All the tutors were immensely generous and encouraging. Performing on the beautiful Sam Wanamaker stage was like a dream!\u201d \u2013 Wenyan Pu<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What an opportunity! To get masterclasses from the best tutors into Shakespeare’s verse, and performance spaces. To be able to play in the Sam Wannamaker with such expert direction and understanding. The course delighted me, enlightened me, and inspired me.” \u2013 Howard Gayton<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The residency is organised by MATP course director <\/em>Prof Konstantinos Thomaidis<\/em><\/a> and the Higher Education team at the Globe, with support from the <\/em>Communications, Drama & Film Department<\/em><\/a> of the University of Exeter.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
