Creative Club forms part of a doctoral research project, approved by University of Exeter FHASS Social Sciences and International Studies Ethics Committee on 20 June 2024 (Application ID: 5685864).
Joining the Club means that you consent to be a research participant. To find out what this entails, please read the information provided below.
All University of Exeter professionals are welcome. This includes academics, professional services, and postgraduate researchers, from any career stage.
This project has two phases. Your participation in Phase One does not obligate you to partcipate in Phase Two if you do not wish.
Phase One
If you consent to take part, then you will become a member of the Creative Club; a seasonal cycle of twice-termly workshops, taking place during the academic year 2024/25. The Club runs, in person, at Penryn and Streatham campuses. Each workshop lasts approximately 2 hours. There is no obligation for you to take part in every workshop; once you are a Creative Club member, you are welcome to participate in as many or as few as you like.
Workshops: Each workshop will make use of a different creative method and will be hosted by a creative practitioner with experience of using/teaching that method. In all cases, no prior experience of the creative method is necessary! The Creative Club simply welcomes those who are curious to experiment and collaborate with colleagues across diverse disciplinary backgrounds.
Interviews: following your engagement with one or more workshops, I will invite you to undertake a semi-structured interview with me. Interview questions will explore your experience of Creative Club, the method(s) used, and how these have shaped your practice. The interview will last ~60-90 minutes and it will be audio-recorded and transcribed for further analysis.
For more information about how data will be collected for this project, and your identifiability options, please consult the sub-menu: data collection.
Phase Two
Towards the end of the academic year you will be invited to celebrate your creative work and share some of the research findings. This will be a co-designed collaborative event with myself and fellow Creative Club members. The event could take the form of a poetry reading, curated exhibition, or short performance. Designing and organising the event will likely involve your participation in some additional meetings and workshops. However, there is no obligation for you to take part in this phase of the project.
The possible benefits of becoming a Creative Club member and research participant, include:
Possible risks of taking part: I do not believe that taking part in this research poses any foreseeable risks to participants. However, if any of the workshop activities/discussions or interview questions cause distress, then workshops/interviews can be paused or stopped. Your data will remain fully confidential and only accessible to the researcher (myself) and my supervisory team. You also have full control over how you will be identified and what material will be processed as part of the dataset.
