Books are everywhere. Some exist in different versions, others are duplicated, some have missing titles and there is no\u202fclear way\u202fto know which copy is the most up to date or where to find the right materials for a course.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now picture a well-organised library. Every book is catalogued. Students and staff know exactly where to find what they need. That is what data governance does for our data. It brings order, clarity, and trust, ensuring the right people have access to the right data at the right time.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the University, data is relied on every day to support planning, service delivery, and decision-making. However, data can become confusing when it appears differently across systems, when definitions are unclear, or when it is not obvious which version of the data should be relied on. When this happens, people end up working from different versions of the truth, making it harder to work confidently with data.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we continue to rely heavily on data to support our academic, operational, and strategic priorities, having a clear and consistent approach to how&nbsp;it&nbsp;is managed has never been more important. This is where data governance comes in.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Data\u202fGovernance?\u202f <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/universityofexeteruk.sharepoint.com\/sites\/DataConnect\/SitePages\/Data-Governance.aspx\">Data governance<\/a>\u202fis the way we manage data across the University to make sure it is\u202faccurate, secure, accessible, and used responsibly. It provides a framework that helps us understand:\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Who is responsible<\/strong>\u202ffor\u202fdifferent types\u202fof data\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What we can do with data<\/strong>\u202fand how it should be used appropriately, in line with policies, processes, and GDPR requirements\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How data should be handled<\/strong>\u202fto keep it\u202faccurate, consistent, and secure\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why it matters<\/strong>\u202fto support good decisions, meet compliance and statutory requirements, and deliver services effectively\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Data is one of our important assets. When it is\u202fwell managed, it becomes a\u202fstrategic\u202ftool that helps us deliver a better experience for students, staff, and the wider university community.\u202f\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why\u202fDoes Data Governance Matter?\u202f&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Data governance matters because it helps&nbsp;us&nbsp;use data confidently, responsibly, and effectively in everything we do.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u202fhelps us\u202fto:\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Improve the student and staff experience:<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>When data is\u202faccurate\u202fand accessible, students and staff can rely on systems to work smoothly. Good data governance helps reduce errors, delays, and confusion.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Support better decision-making:<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>Reliable data enables leaders, teams, and departments to make informed choices. Whether\u202fit&nbsp;is\u202fplanning resources, evaluating performance, or shaping strategy, trusted data is essential for better decision-making.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Meet compliance and reporting obligations:<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>\u202fWe must report data to external bodies like HESA. Data governance ensures that these reports are\u202faccurate,\u202ftimely, and meet regulatory standard. This reduces risk and\u202fmaintains\u202fthe university\u2019s credibility.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Deliver services more efficiently:<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>When data is well-managed and consistent across systems, processes run more smoothly. This means less duplication, fewer manual fixes, and faster delivery of services.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Treat data as an important asset that supports our institutional goals:<\/strong>\u202fData is not just information.\u202fIt\u2019s\u202fa strategic resource. By managing it properly, we can unlock its full value to support teaching, research, student success, and operational excellence across the University.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Governance Is a Shared Responsibility\u202f&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u202fdon\u2019t\u202fneed to be a data expert to be part of data governance. If you work with data in any form, take a moment to think about the data you use, where it comes from, and what happens when something\u202fdoesn\u2019t\u202flook right. Those everyday questions and conversations are where good data governance really starts.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data governance also helps clarify roles, such as who is accountable for key datasets, who supports day-to-day data\u202fquality\u202fmanagement, and who looks after the systems that hold our data.
