Charlotte Chivers is a final year PhD researcher within the Centre for Rural Policy Research and is exploring the efficacy of agricultural advice surrounding diffuse water pollution. She is in the final throes of writing her thesis and is starting a position at the University of Gloucestershire in September.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Top tips for writing your thesis<\/b><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Start simple\u00a0and then add detail;\u00a0don’t run before you can walk! It may work best to draft\u00a0your\u00a0thoughts\u00a0out first before adding detail<\/li>\n
  2. Find out what your writing style is (see the academic writing resources in this e-module)<\/li>\n
  3. Think about ways in which your research is novel throughout the process<\/li>\n
  4. Talk to other PhD researchers at a similar stage to you<\/li>\n
  5. Communicate with your supervisors<\/li>\n
  6. Don\u2019t be daunted by the scale of a thesis \u2013 break it down into \u2018bitesize\u2019 chunks<\/li>\n
  7. Don\u2019t rush \u2013 be systematic or you may have to do things again in the future which may be more time consuming<\/li>\n
  8. Find a working schedule which works for YOU \u2013 everyone is different \u2013 try different things e.g. Pomodoro technique\u00a0(see\u00a0infographic within this e-module)<\/li>\n
  9. Plan carefully (but don\u2019t\u00a0\u2018over-plan\u2019 \u2013 this can easily become procrastination!)<\/li>\n
  10. Try to keep up with referencing as you\u00a0write;\u00a0writing a bibliography from scratch isn\u2019t fun<\/li>\n
  11. Back EVERYTHING up.<\/li>\n
  12. Make yourself a schedule to aim for and send it to your supervisors so you\u2019re held accountable<\/li>\n
  13. Don\u2019t overwork yourself<\/li>\n
  14. Be kind to yourself \u2013 sleep, exercise, wash (!), eat healthy!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
