Her research explores intimate partner abuse in later life using qualitative methods. She is interviewing older survivors and the professionals who support them to better understand their experiences and inform future research and practice.

Health research has the potential to be emotionally demanding across the different disciplines and settings it can take place. It is widely recognized that little attention has been given to preparing doctoral students and novice researchers engaging in emotionally demanding research (Kumar and Cavallaro, 2018). The Researcher Led Initiatives award has given us an opportunity to bring together PGRs and ECRs across the university to discuss the intersecting methodological and ethical issues we face, to offer peer support and to share information and knowledge. We used two key activities to do this: the development of an ECR/PGR network, and a panel session with experienced researchers.

Why did we apply for the RLI?

Whilst we first crossed paths on our masters courses here at Exeter, it wasn’t until the 2025 PHSS PGR conference that we properly connected. Despite working on quite different topics, we found common ground over working on research that was often described as ‘sensitive’ or ‘challenging’. We found it helpful to be able to chat through our concerns or apprehensions together and have a space to reflect on our work with someone who ‘gets it’.

Therefore, when we saw the funding for Researcher Led Initiatives, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to develop a peer network for other PGRs and ECRs who may be in a similar position as we are.

What is Emotionally Demanding Health Research?

Kumar and Cavallaro (2018) define emotionally demanding research as:

‘research that demands a tremendous amount of mental, emotional, or physical energy and potentially affects or depletes the researcher’s health or well-being’

Whilst we both work on projects that fit the typical idea of what emotionally demanding research might look like (we both are qualitative researchers using in-depth interview methods, Ellie to investigate intimate partner violence/abuse with older adults, and Hayley to focus on fathers’ experiences of neonatal palliative care), we recognise that it is not just qualitative interview research that can be challenging. Many areas of health research have the potential to be emotionally demanding in many different ways. It is essential that awareness, training, and mitigation strategies should not be limited to one particular type of research.

What did you do as part of the RLI?

PGR/ECR Network

For the first network session, we were joined by Rachel Griffiths, who delivered a fantastic session on how reflective journalling can support the emotional process of research. Following this, we met up monthly over tea and coffee to check in with each other and reflect on how our work was going. These sessions were all offered hybrid (which did involve the inevitable tech issues!).

Panel Session

We complemented the network sessions with a panel session with experienced researchers across different disciplines within the university who shared insights, practical tips, and tools for managing the challenges related to this work for PGRs, ECRs, and their supervisors. We pre-discussed the questions we would like to hear discussed in the network, and opened up questions to the audience. We deliberately sought a range of researchers with specialisms in primary and secondary research, and community engagement.

It was reassuring to hear from experienced researchers we respect openly and honestly discuss some of the challenges associated with their work. It can often feel quite isolating, and like you might be the only one finding your work challenging, so it was really validating to know that we are not alone in finding our work difficult.

Following the session, we worked with a research illustrator to produce a poster summarising the key take home messages.

Is it too late to join the network?

No! Although our RLI grant has come to an end, this work very much continues. We received a lot of lovely feedback about how members would like the network to continue so we will continue to meet once a month during the 26/27 academic year. The network is open to postgraduate researchers and early career researchers (including pre-doctoral researchers) from all faculties, departments, and disciplines.

We also have a padlet which we regularly update with various resources designed to support PGRs and ECRs working on emotionally demanding research.

If you would like to join the network, or would like to talk further about work in this area, feel free to email either Hayley (hlrr202@exeter.ac.uk) or Ellie (eh728@exeter.ac.uk). We would love to hear from you!

Kumar S, Cavallaro L. Researcher Self-Care in Emotionally Demanding Research: A Proposed Conceptual Framework.
