Throughout November the Doctoral College have provided a range of training and networking opportunities for PGRs and ECRs with a Focus On\u2026Communicating Your Research. This included a panel and networking event on Monday 14<sup>th<\/sup> November, where PGRs and ECRs gathered to present and discuss their experiences of communicating their research to different audiences and in different fora \u2013 from Twitter to 12 year olds.<\/p>\n<p>The event had four invited speakers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MalakaMohammed\">Malaka Shwaikh<\/a>, a PGR in Arab and Islamic studies, who discussed her experiences of PGR and academic communities of Twitter<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mgknight24\">Matthew Knight<\/a>, a PGR in Archaeology, who discussed using Twitter and <a href=\"https:\/\/alifeinfragments.wordpress.com\/\">Blogging<\/a> to engage people with his research<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/RichardKCross\">Richard Cross<\/a>, a PGR in Biosciences, who discussed his participation in <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.exeter.ac.uk\/bioscience-pressgang\/\">PressGang<\/a> who advertise the successful research carried out in the Biosciences department at Exeter<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SolarisMaria\"> Maria Weber<\/a>, an ECR in Astrophysics, who talking about talking about your research \u2013 to colleagues, as well as the general public<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There was a lot of discussion and debate throughout the session, but for me the key take home messages were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sometimes it\u2019s not about the amount of followers your blog or twitter account has, but the quality of engagement you get from the followers you have!<\/li>\n<li>Practice articulating yours and others research for a general \u2013 public \u2013 audience is invaluable. It demonstrates that you can make complex ideas \u2018digestible\u2019, and will help develop clarity in your research writing generally!<\/li>\n<li>Talking to people about your research is about knowing your audience \u2013 what they may or may not know about your research topic, and making sure you don\u2019t \u2018dumb down\u2019. 12 year olds can understand complex ideas \u2013 you just have to find a way to engage with them. Images and objects \u2013 engaging other senses \u2013 is a great way in to understanding complex ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the proliferation of social networking sites, and the increasing emphasis on impact and public engagement, there is a clear need for the academy to rethink the way we engage with and communicate our research. Remember there\u2019s lots of training available on twitter, blogging, working the media, public engagement and much more on the Researcher Development programme!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Autumn term has seen the first Doctoral College Focus On\u2026 event.
