Drawing together mathematical expertise from across the University

External outreach, impact, consultancy

A key goal of ExCMS is to drive forward the impact and outreach of the Mathematical Sciences at the University of Exeter. We hope that by engaging with different research groups across the University, with Exeter Alumni, industry and other organisations we can create and support new avenues for boosting the outreach and impact of the Mathematical Sciences at the University of Exeter. If you have any ideas that need support, please get in contact with us or with the Department of Mathematical Sciences DoBEI.

Consultancy

ExCMS aims to nurture links between external partners and members of the University Mathematical Sciences community. Dr Stefan Seigert (Director of Business Engagement and Impact for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics) and the Innovation, Impact and Business service (LINK) of the University of Exeter are happy to work together with you to find people with the skills to help you solve your Mathematical Sciences problems, no matter how big or small they may be.

Our research community includes significant groups with expertise in Statistics, Data Science, Numerical Modelling, Pure Mathematics and especially applications to climate and weather or sustainability solutions. We have a range of links with industry, commerce and policy sectors but are always happy to discuss new possibilities. We greatly value opportunities for all members of the department, from students to professors to contribute to consultancy whether via student project work or via contract research.

Offer a project

Our MScs, such as the MSc in Applied Data Science and Statistics, gives training in statistics, machine learning, R and Python, with a strong focus on application to real-life datasets and problems. They also take modules focusing on communication, presentation, ethics and governance. Project topics can cover the full spectrum from very technical to very applied and can involve all aspects of applied data science and statistics including data collection and cleaning, modelling, ethical considerations, and analysis. This is an excellent opportunity to explore a new idea or perform an extended analysis of your research data. If you are interested, get in contact with us.
