{"id":156,"date":"2018-04-05T09:00:27","date_gmt":"2018-04-05T08:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/?p=156"},"modified":"2018-04-05T09:00:27","modified_gmt":"2018-04-05T08:00:27","slug":"research-270-million-visits-made-to-english-coastlines-each-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/2018\/04\/05\/research-270-million-visits-made-to-english-coastlines-each-year\/","title":{"rendered":"#Research: 270 million visits made to English coastlines each year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Authors &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/bluehealth2020.eu\/people\/lewis-elliott\">Dr Lewis Elliott<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/bluehealth2020.eu\/people\/alex-smalley\"> Alex Smalley<\/a>\u00a0both work on the <a href=\"https:\/\/bluehealth2020.eu\/\">BlueHealth project<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Project Podcast | Coastal visits estimated\" width=\"819\" height=\"461\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pDhS_0VdDLs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bluehealth2020.eu\/publications\/coastal-visits\">New research conducted<\/a> by the University of Exeter Medical School as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bluehealth2020.eu\">BlueHealth project<\/a> has found that approximately 271 million recreational visits are made to coasts and beaches each year, and that the most common activity on these visits is walking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.marpol.2018.03.013\">The research, published in the journal <\/a><em>Marine Policy,\u00a0<\/em>also revealed that most people head to &#8216;blue&#8217; environments for relaxation and social reasons.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bluehealth2020.eu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Marine-Policy-Bars-FINAL.gif\" width=\"1033\" height=\"548\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">In both coastal settings, the most popular activities undertaken were walking, either with or without a dog, conducted on 123.7 million beach visits annually, and on 78.2 million other coastline visits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Whilst walking (either with or without a dog) was the most popular activity, the analysis showed that coastal walks were more likely to be made by females and older adults, suggesting the coast may play a particular role in supporting physical activity in these groups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A growing body of research has shown links between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/news\/featurednews\/title_349054_en.html\">spending time in nature and improvements in health and wellbeing<\/a>. The findings of this study come as the government calls for greater protection of, and access to, these natural spaces and demonstrate the importance of the UK\u2019s coasts for health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Other popular activities were sunbathing and paddling, taking place on a quarter of visits to the beach and amounting to 40 million dips a year. Seaside trips were not affected by socio-economic status however, hinting that spending time in these environments appeals to people across the social spectrum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecehh.org\/people\/lewis-elliott\/\">Dr Lewis Elliott, Environmental Psychologist<\/a> at the University of Exeter and lead author of the study, believes the findings are important for the management of our coastal resources:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe know that blue spaces can deliver significant benefits to health, wellbeing and the economy, yet no previous research has rigorously attempted to estimate their popularity for recreation, or considered the benefits they may have for public health. Our estimates have, for the first time, been able to quantify the importance of our beaches and coasts and we hope they will help planners make more informed decisions when considering the management of these natural spaces.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The research team used data from the Monitor of Engagement with the Natural Environment (MENE) survey to produce their findings, investigating the characteristics of more than 326,000 nature-based visits from 2009 to 2016.
