However, confusion remains surrounding the taxonomy of many species- making conservation difficult. Hence, more research needs to be done to answer taxonomic questions that still surround these endangered species. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Elasmobranchs are some of the most fascinating creatures of the underwater world. Currently, there are at least\u00a01,118 \u202fextant species of sharks, skates, and rays\u202ffound throughout all corners of the globe: from depths of up to 4,000m in the deep sea and the icy waters of the Arctic, to shallower habitats\u00a0in estuaries and freshwater lakes. Indeed, this group of cartilaginous fish can be found in just about every aquatic ecosystem on the planet, where they play vital roles in maintaining ecosystem balance.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, elasmobranchs are a group at high risk of extinction; due to habitat\u00a0destruction, overfishing, and being caught as bycatch,\u00a0an estimated 25% of species are thought to be threatened worldwide. The impact of elasmobranch decline is poorly understood, but given their important roles in aquatic ecosystems, the consequences are likely to be far-reaching.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-348\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/203\/2018\/05\/tourism-300x245.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/203\/2018\/05\/tourism-300x245.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/203\/2018\/05\/tourism-1024x836.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/203\/2018\/05\/tourism-768x627.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/203\/2018\/05\/tourism.png 1078w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of all the elasmobranchs, the batoids (skates and rays) are the most vulnerable, with around 20% now threatened with extinction. Despite this, effective conservation of batoid fish has been hindered by a lack of accurate scientific data; many species are now listed as \u2018data deficient\u2019 on the IUCN red list, making establishing accurate conservation methods difficult.<\/p>\n<p>This lack of data can be partially attributed to the large degree of morphological and ecological similarities among living orders of skates and rays. These similarities cause high amounts of cryptic speciation (animals that look alike but are genetically distinct), which results in taxonomic confusion and unstable nomenclature.<\/p>\n<p>A classic example of cryptic speciation can be found in the Manta rays. Currently, there are two species of Manta ray; the larger species,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giant_oceanic_manta_ray\"><em>Manta birostris<\/em><\/a>, can grow up to 7\u00a0m in width, while the smaller,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reef_manta_ray\"><em>Manta alfredi<\/em><\/a>, reaches 5.5\u00a0m. However, these were thought to represent just one species until 2009, due to their morphological similarities. This discovery has been vital in the conservation of mantas, particularly as it has allowed the clarification of the two species\u2019 ranges. Since <em>M. birostris<\/em> is thought to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Animal_migration\">migrate<\/a>\u00a0across open oceans, while\u00a0<em>M. alfredi<\/em>\u00a0tends to be resident and coastal, conservation efforts have now been targeted accordingly.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-346 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/203\/2018\/05\/bycatch-300x209.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/203\/2018\/05\/bycatch-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/203\/2018\/05\/bycatch-1024x715.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/203\/2018\/05\/bycatch-768x536.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/exetermarine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/203\/2018\/05\/bycatch.png 1335w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My Masters by Research focusses on resolving taxonomic questions that still surround several other species of endangered rays and skates, including the \u2018common skate\u2019 complex (<em>Dipturus cf. flossada <\/em>and <em>Dipturus cf. intermedia<\/em>), the Norwegian skate (<em>Dipturus nidarosiensis<\/em>), the longnose skate (<em>Dipturus oxyrinchus<\/em>), the thornback ray (<em>Raja clavata<\/em>) and the Madeiran skate (<em>Raja maderensis<\/em>). In order to answer these questions, I will be using restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (nextRAD) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing to build phylogenetic trees for analysis. This work could potentially lead to the discovery of new species of endangered skate and has important conservation implications for batoid fish.<\/p>\n<p>This project, supervised by <a href=\"http:\/\/biosciences.exeter.ac.uk\/staff\/index.php?web_id=A_Griffiths\">Dr Andrew Griffiths<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/biosciences.exeter.ac.uk\/staff\/index.php?web_id=jamie_stevens\">Dr Jamie Stevens<\/a>, forms just one part of a host of exciting work being done by the Molecular Ecology and Evolution group (<a href=\"http:\/\/projects.exeter.ac.uk\/meeg\/\">MEEG<\/a>) here at Exeter University.
