Ethan and Molly talk to Ben, the producer, about the work they have been doing as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/pg-research\/degrees\/biosciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Masters by Research<\/a> students for the past two years. Under the supervision of <a href=\"https:\/\/biosciences.exeter.ac.uk\/staff\/index.php?web_id=Lucy_Hawkes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Lucy Hawkes<\/a>, Molly and Ethan have been working closely with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceibahamas.org\/news\/2017\/9\/16\/a-four-year-legacy-dr-owen-oshea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Owen O&#8217;Shea<\/a>\u00a0at the Cape Eleuthera Insitute (CEI) in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceibahamas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bahamas<\/a>, to study the stingrays in the local waters.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stingray Research Update\" width=\"819\" height=\"461\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9aCpAVl7FI0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Molly and Ethan worked with two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/static\/categories_criteria_3_1#categories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data deficient<\/a> species of stingray; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/details\/60149\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern Stingray<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/details\/60161\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caribbean Whiptail Ray<\/a> \u00a0The main focus of the research was to investigate the rays&#8217; diets. Well, in the Bahamas there is no legislation for the protection of mangroves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;In the Bahamas, there&#8217;s lots of these mangrove creeks, and plenty of fish use them as nursery habitats because they offer a lot of shelter within the roots&#8230; stingrays occupy these systems as well&#8230; they feed on worms, crabs and things within the sea floor, so they use the mangroves a lot to find (their) food.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can find out more about why mangroves are so important <a href=\"http:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/our_work\/oceans\/coasts\/mangroves\/mangrove_importance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Beaches are very popular in terms of tourist economy, so (mangroves) get destroyed quite a lot&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">While the stingrays rely on the mangroves for food, it seems they also offer plenty to the mangroves themselves. In their final year they undertook a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.exeter.ac.uk\/fieldcourses\/category\/uncategorized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">field course<\/a> to Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas, this sewed the seeds of their Masters by Research.
