Policy@Exeter joined delegates of the Exeter Climate and Global Tipping Points Conferences to celebrate the launch of Exeter Climate Policy – a new University initiative which provides tailored support to policymakers looking to develop informed climate policies.
Exeter Climate Policy was founded in partnership with Green Futures Solutions, the Global Systems Institute (GSI), the Coalition for Capacity on Climate Action (C3A), Cambridge Econometrics, Trex, and S-Curve Economics. Comprised of leading climate researchers, the initiative works with decisionmakers to model climate policies adapted to specific geographical demands.
The evening’s launch event highlighted the goals of this new network, and shared hopes for Exeter Climate Policy’s continued relationships with global industry partners and policymakers. Keynote speakers included the University of Exeter’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Business Engagement and Innovation, Stuart Brocklehurst; senior climate economist at the World Bank and Co-Director of C3A, Etienne Espagne; and Director of Exeter Climate Policy, Professor Jean Francois Mercure.
As well as celebrating the future of Exeter Climate Policy, the launch also offered some valuable insights into best practices when working with decisionmakers to implement climate policies. A core feature of the initiative is its use of specialist expertise to provide flexible support for economic transition. This helps ensure that all suggestions made are practical for the environment for which they were designed, working in harmony with existing infrastructures, adhering to available budgets, and demonstrating an awareness of political trends. Collaboration with policymakers was the message of the evening; establishing a dialogue rather than employing a unidirectional approach to research dissemination. Exeter Climate Policy hopes that by providing structured, yet adaptable support, resulting policies will have the maximum positive impact on our environment.
