Coaching and Mentoring

Coaching

Our internal coaches can discuss and support you to work through a number of different work related topics, including career development. Coaching can help you identify your needs, strengths and weaknesses and can help you set and achieve clear career goals. All staff at the University can access this service.

What is the difference between Coaching and Mentoring?

Coaching and mentoring are not the same thing. The approach, timescale and focus of a mentor and coach are different so it is important to understand these differences from the beginning, so you choose the most appropriate support for your needs.

A coach does not need to be familiar with the work you do or your workplace. Coaching is ‘Unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.’

Mentoring

A suitable mentor will have more experience and offer you advice and guidance on career steps and progression. Finding a mentor in a chosen career area can also help you understand what it takes to move on and how this might be achieved in your own person situation. Mentors also often provide access to valuable networks and connections within the industry. Through their guidance, individuals can expand their professional network, which can lead to new opportunities, collaborations, and career advancement.
