In this year of lockdowns and social distancing, there\u2019s something incredibly comforting about watching the bakers in their &#8216;Covid bubble&#8217;, where there\u2019s no fear of a (Hollywood) handshake.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just watching <em>Bake Off<\/em> that lets me escape. Since the start of the pandemic, I have found peace in baking. When the stress of writing my master\u2019s dissertation or job applications was too much, I would take the evening off to bake. As Instagram was flooded with photos tagged #covidbaking and #quarantinebaking, it was clear I wasn\u2019t the only one turning to baking as a way of distracting myself from reality.<\/p>\n<p>Home baking soared during the UK\u2019s initial COVID lockdown, as people looked for ways to fill new &#8216;spare-time&#8217;, deal with stress and connect with others on social media. When supermarkets struggled with the high demand for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegrocer.co.uk\/service-and-availability\/coronavirus-availability-which-supermarkets-have-the-best-stocks-of-flour\/605350.article\">flour<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/yeast-coronavirus-supply\">yeast<\/a>, bakers got creative \u2013 turning towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/p\/15-flourless-baking-recipes-for-when-your-grocery-store-is-out-of-flour-22792772\">flour-less bakes<\/a> and sourdough. It wasn\u2019t just individuals who got in on the baking trend: chains such as <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/04\/06\/pret-reveals-recipe-chocolate-chip-cookies-12514097\/\">Pret and Greggs released the recipes for their beloved bakes<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/food\/2020\/mar\/31\/the-best-instagram-cookalongs-to-follow-in-your-kitchen-at-home\">chefs and restaurants hosted &#8216;cook-alongs&#8217; on Instagram<\/a>. Feel free to leave us a comment letting us know what you\u2019ve been baking!<\/p>\n<p>A quick look at Google trends for some key search terms highlights a significant increase in interest at the beginning of lockdown, gradually falling off again in the summer months. Yet interest appears to be growing again, perhaps due to a combination of tightening COVID restrictions and <em>Bake Off<\/em> coming back to our screens.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-382 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/foodsystemimpactscv19\/files\/2020\/10\/Google-searches-for-baking-related-topics-during-initial-COVID-lockdown-719x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"923\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/foodsystemsimpactscv19\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/351\/2020\/10\/Google-searches-for-baking-related-topics-during-initial-COVID-lockdown-719x1024.jpg 719w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/foodsystemsimpactscv19\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/351\/2020\/10\/Google-searches-for-baking-related-topics-during-initial-COVID-lockdown-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/foodsystemsimpactscv19\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/351\/2020\/10\/Google-searches-for-baking-related-topics-during-initial-COVID-lockdown-768x1093.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/foodsystemsimpactscv19\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/351\/2020\/10\/Google-searches-for-baking-related-topics-during-initial-COVID-lockdown-1079x1536.jpg 1079w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/foodsystemsimpactscv19\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/351\/2020\/10\/Google-searches-for-baking-related-topics-during-initial-COVID-lockdown.jpg 1278w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/>In her essay for <em>The Correspondent, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/thecorrespondent.com\/emilydreyfuss\">Emily Dreyfuss<\/a> writes about how sharing pictures of our bakes on social media helps remind us &#8216;we\u2019re all in this, whatever this is, together&#8217;. The importance of feeling a part of a community is also discussed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/01490400.2020.1773980\">Easterbrook-Smith (2020)<\/a>, who suggests that in addition to providing sustenance and stress-relief, baking allows us to demonstrate our skills on social media and connect virtually with people when face-to-face contact is limited.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago, I started baking my own bread. It\u2019s still far from perfect, but I quickly realised how much money I can save by baking my own loaves. Following the financial crisis in 2008, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2013\/05\/in-italy-austerity-is-served-on-homemade-bread\/275951\/\">Italians began baking more bread and pizza at home<\/a>, while here in the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/business\/recession-puts-home-baking-on-the-rise-6785805.html\">home baking also increased<\/a>. According to the AHDB, a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahdb.org.uk\/news\/consumer-insight-how-a-more-price-conscious-consumer-affects-product-choices\">&#8216;third of consumers have had some change to their household employment status&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0because of COVID-19 and will, therefore, likely be looking for ways to save money on food. Their survey found that 72% of consumers are cooking from scratch more in an attempt to save money. Future research should look specifically at whether home baking is being used as a method of reducing shopping costs.<\/p>\n<p>Whether I\u2019m curled up on the couch watching <em>Bake Off<\/em> or baking banana bread in the kitchen, it\u2019s easy to forget what\u2019s going on in the world outside our living room. Over the last few months, baking has offered many of us a much-needed break, a creative outlet. Will this interest in home baking continue in a post-pandemic world?
