The Future is Green project team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Based within the University of Exeter\u2019s Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy, The Future is Green<\/em> was led by an international and interdisciplinary team of experts in engineering, business, sustainability and the circular economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Philipp Thies<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor of Renewable Energy (Engineering)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Philipp’s research interest lies in the reliability engineering of renewable energy technologies with a focus on offshore energy. A focus of his work has been on critical components such as dynamic submarine cables and mooring for floating offshore wind.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through The Future is Green<\/em><\/strong> project, Philipp aims to deliver green skills training programmes on topics relating to offshore energy developments. <\/p>\n<\/div>

Allen Alexander<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor in Innovation & Circular Economy (Business School)<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allen is a senior researcher and Associate Professor in Innovation and Circular Economy<\/em> at the University of Exeter<\/em>. His work focuses on investigating the roles of innovation and knowledge generation in enabling a transition towards the circular economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He leads, alongside Stefano Pascucci, on circular economy and future innovation under the Future is Green<\/em><\/strong> project. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Justin Hinshelwood<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Associate Professor in Renewable Energy (Engineering)<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justin is a Chartered Engineer with a background in biophysics, software engineering, and integration of renewable energy technologies.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is working on the clean energy branch of the Future is Green <\/em><\/strong>project to deliver executive education programmes for individuals looking to retrain or upskill in green skills for the future, in topics such as renewable energy systems. <\/p>\n<\/div>

Mary Hesling<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact and Partnership Development Manager<\/em>, Exeter Innovation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary is Project Manager for The Future is Green<\/em><\/strong>. She has over 20 years\u2019 experience in project and corporate event management and previously led the University of Exeter <\/em>\u2018Arca<\/a>\u2019 <\/em>project building skills for the circular economy in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through her work on ‘The Future is Green’ Mary, alongside Katie, aims to continue ‘Arca<\/a>‘s legacy and vision of a circular Cornwall.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Julian Gregory<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research & Impact fellow<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Julian Gregory is an energy policy academic, whose research interests include the successful development and deployment of floating wind technologies & the transition to a Circular Economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previous research includes the decarbonisation of Large Energy Intensive Industries (LEIIs) in the UK with the University of Manchester<\/em> and the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre <\/em>(IDRIC.org). Before becoming an academic, Julian was an investment banker in both the UK and Australia, which included the development and financing of renewable energy projects.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Katie Riesner<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact and Partnership Development Officer<\/em>, Exeter Innovation<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Katie is Project Officer of The Future is Green<\/em><\/strong> Project.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her previous Project Officer role, she managed the marketing of the University of Exeter <\/em>\u2018Arca\u2019 project, building circular economy skills in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Here she synthesised information and created accessible and beautiful-looking posts, <\/a>breaking down circular economy theory and stories of interest for small businesses across Cornwall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She contributes to the ‘The Future is Green’ project through organising events, building relations, contributing to skills courses, and creating marketing materials.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Stefano\u2019s work as Professor in Sustainability and Circular Economy<\/em> at the University of Exeter Business School <\/em>sees him exploring sustainability through organisation theories, innovation management, entrepreneurship and value-chain analysis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He leads on circular economy, leadership, and future innovation aspects of the Future is Green<\/em><\/strong> project. <\/p>\n<\/div>

Matt Cahill<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

prev. Impact and Partnership Development Officer<\/em>, Exeter Innovation<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matt joined the team from September 2024 – March 2025, having previously worked in museum and public engagement roles and having recently returned from America, delivering Camp programmes with South Mountain YMCA<\/em>, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is a strong community outreach professional skilled in public speaking, historical research, information analysis & Project Management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leading on delegate management for our Skills for FLOW event, he was excited to embark on a sustainability journey alongside The Future is Green<\/strong><\/em> participants and to be working as part of the fantastic Exeter Innovation team.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jim Grant <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

prev. Head of Energy Futures and Engineering<\/em>, Exeter Innovation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specialising in energy and marine technology, Jim worked directly with businesses and other stakeholders to help them access knowledge and expertise within the University of Exeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was previously Head of Business Development, Cornwall<\/em>, where he managed teams delivering business-facing projects worth over \u00a340 million. He left the University in October 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>
