I grew up in a Canadian city that has experienced environmental degradation because of the mining industry. This inspired me to pursue a career which focuses on the protection of natural habitats and species at risk. Applying to Exeter was a no-brainer because of its global reputation in ecology, and the quality of research published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am grateful and proud to have been awarded the Exeter Excellence scholarship<\/a>. Not only does it alleviate the financial responsibility from my family and I, but this scholarship also motivates me to work hard during my studies as it makes me feel that the university believes in what I can achieve.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Conservation is essential all over the world which is why I love the international approach taken by my course, whether it be learning about the work of the academic staff or going on field courses. I have had the chance to spend two weeks travelling across Kenya to learn about the challenges of human-wildlife interactions and conservation initiatives in unique tropical ecosystems. Additionally, in the spring, I will be conducting a research project in the French Pyrenees to examine the effects of climate change on birds in a mountainous environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, I\u2019ve particularly enjoyed my Conservation and Biodiversity module, in which I have been taught by several world-leading lecturers, each presenting about their diverse specialities, and visited rewilding sites around the southwest of England. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have no doubt that this course is the best step I could take towards my professional development. The extracurricular events such as weekly guest seminars and frequent career services such as fairs create an environment which encourages networking and shows that countless job, placement and PhD opportunities exist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the short time that I have been at the University of Exeter, I\u2019ve met tons of interested and interesting people, forged great relationships with my classmates, but I was pleasantly surprised with how I got along with my professors, who are down to earth and really do take the time to listen and make students their priority. I tend to be independent, but I feel reassured to know that the academic department has my back.  <\/p>\n\n\n

I\u2019m an outdoorsy person so I feel so fortunate to spend this year in Cornwall with its unique microclimate, numerous hiking trails and beaches. The student village adjacent to campus where I live feels very alive, both in the amount of vegetation growing, and in the number of fun, active people everywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My new life at the University of Exeter blew my expectations away, and the vibe here can be summarised as work hard and play hard. To get the most out of this studying experience, I would encourage new students to arrive with the mentality of saying yes. Participate both in and out of class, attend those optional seminars, and interact with lots of different people. To make a difference in the world of conservation, I strongly believe that the great balance between academic and personal opportunities at the University of Exeter, makes this the best place to grow and thrive.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
