Brian Rappert (Sociology), Abi Dymond (Criminology) and Stephen Skinner (Law) have successfully completed the second phase of their work on monitoring lethal force worldwide. Funded by the Open Society Foundations, this team of researchers at the University of Exeter has led the development of a global project on enhancing state accountability for loss of life in law enforcement. A new website launched on 13th May 2024, https://lethal-force-monitor.org/ provides detailed reports on 13 jurisdictions around the world, which can be read individually or comparatively. The reports cover the context and structure of policing and law enforcement in each country, relevant legal frameworks, policies and practices relating to reporting and responding to deaths connected with the use of force, and comparative indexes of the use and abuse of force. The website also contains links to the project’s previous reports and recent publications.
