On 12-13 December 2024, Dr Christine Bicknell participated in an expert workshop at the University of Ghent. The event, convened by a team under Professors Clara Burbano- Herrera and Yves Hyak brought together an interdisciplinary group of experts from both Europe and Latin America to discuss issues surrounding vulnerability in prisons within these regions. Information on their group’s projects and important work can be found here. Workshop participants included a former UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, a Member of the UN Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture, a former member of the Human Rights Committee, members from the European Committee on the Prevention of Torture (CPT) and a former European Court of Human Rights judge. Representation from Latin America included two former Commissioners (one, its former President) of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. One of the greatest insights however, was brought by a participant, Ms. Gabriela Cruz. Now a Human Rights Defender for the conditions and treatment of female prisoners, Ms Cruz had been incarcerated with her disabled child in a Mexican prison for 7 years. In her own contribution, Christine presented her work on the use of and trends surrounding juvenile solitary confinement of children in Europe.
