Please briefly outline the project/tasks/responsibilities you worked on during your Professional Pathways internship.

During my Professional Pathways internship, I established an Instagram account for The University’s Sustainability team, showcasing initiatives through engaging content and photography. I quickly adapted to new technologies, using Canva to design captivating digital displays. My role extended beyond digital realms as I actively engaged with local businesses, bringing them on board with our sustainability efforts. Additionally, I contributed to our newsletter, writing content that highlighted our activities and goals. This experience honed my skills in social media management, digital design, community engagement, and content creation, all centred around promoting sustainability.

How has the Professional Pathways programme helped you in taking the next steps in your career?

The Professional Pathways program has been instrumental in advancing my career, combining practical training with real-world experience. The assessment centre component was a critical practice ground for graduate scheme applications, enhancing my confidence and skills in professional settings. The marketing training provided a solid foundation, greatly benefiting my MSc in Management, especially in the marketing module. This knowledge was pivotal in understanding complex concepts and applying them academically.

Additionally, the group project enhanced my collaboration skills, essential for my Master’s program. The knowledge and experience I acquired from the Pathways program played a crucial role in securing an internship at a media agency. There, I applied my skills in marketing and communication, specifically working on projects for Apple.

Furthermore, the insights and skills acquired through the Professional Pathways program were instrumental in my preparation for a successful interview, leading to my employment with the Career Zone. In this role, I effectively utilise these experiences to enhance the promotion of The Career Mentor Scheme and Ask An Alum on social media.

This program has been a transformative element in my career path, equipping me with the necessary skills and experiences to seamlessly transition from a background in geography to the fields of marketing and management. It has endowed me with a diverse range of skills and knowledge, continually opening doors to new opportunities and pathways for professional advancement.

Why would you recommend the Professional Pathways programme to other students?

I would strongly advocate for the Professional Pathways program, particularly for students seeking to shift their career focus as I did, transitioning from geography to marketing. This program stands out not only for its educational value but also as a dynamic networking platform. It offers an enriching environment where you can connect with other students who share similar career aspirations, fostering a community of collaboration and mutual learning.

The networking aspect is further enhanced by the opportunity to interact with established professionals in marketing. These interactions are incredibly beneficial, as they provide insights into different industry practices, emerging trends, and valuable career advice. Engaging with these professionals can open doors to internships, mentorships, and even future job opportunities, making the Professional Pathways program an invaluable asset for any student looking to broaden their professional network and gain practical insights into their chosen field.
