Name of Student: Sophie

Pathway Programme: Pathways to Charity and Development (2024 cohort)

Internship Role: Fundraising Content Officer

Summary of Organisation: Step One works in various communities across Devon, from supported housing to our inpatient ward at Cypress Hospital. Our aim is always the same: to help people not simply take their place but to thrive in their local community.

Please briefly outline the project/tasks/responsibilities you worked on during your Professional Pathways internship:

As part of my internship, I helped to create Step One Charity’s fundraising pack, which will be distributed to supporters who choose to raise money for Step One through community fundraising.

How has the Professional Pathways programme helped you in taking the next steps in your career?

Taking part in the Professional Pathways to Charity and Development has made me more sure that it is the sector I want to go into. The common thread throughout all the speakers in the training is that their work helps to make a difference and working in the sector brings a large amount of fulfilment. Equally, my internship gave me valuable insight into what working for a charitable organisation is like. Even in a week I felt like my work was helping to make a difference.’

How do you think this experience will impact on your employability as you enter the job market as a recent graduate?

‘It will definitely make me more attractive to employers because they will see that I have experience working for a charity and that I have had the opportunity to improve my writing and communication skills.

What advice would you give to a student who has to complete an internship via remote or hybrid working?

If you are hybrid working, I would recommend going into the office if you have the opportunity because you can meet the team and get more of a feel for the work environment. When working remotely, try and make the most of any interactions you have with your line manager or other colleagues, whether that be on virtual calls or by email, to get to know them and the organisation. Whether you are hybrid or remote, communication is essential and you can do this by asking for feedback or communicating regularly with your line manager by email to check you are on the right track.’

Why would you recommend the Professional Pathways programme to other students?

The Professional Pathways programme is an amazing scheme from the University that gives professional work experience (and paid!) and training in different sectors. Whether you are unsure about what area you want to go into or are looking to get more experience, the Pathways programme is great for your CV and employability.’
