Name of Student: Vic Johnson

Job Title: Cornwall Coastal Meadows Intern

Company Name: National Trust

Description of Organisation:

As Europe’s largest conservation charity, we look after nature, beauty and history for everyone to enjoy. We do it with the help of millions of members, volunteers, staff and donors. Without this, we couldn’t care for the miles of coastline, woodlands, countryside and the hundreds of historic buildings, gardens and precious collections we protect. We aim to create 25,000 hectares of new habitats by 2025.

By this time, our ambition is that at least 50 per cent of our farmland will be ‘nature-friendly’, with protected hedgerows, field margins, ponds, woodland, and other habitats allowing plants and animals to thrive.

What was your biggest achievement on your internship?

My biggest achievement is independently operating the brush harvesting machine through a meadow while identifying and avoiding unwanted/invasive plants, while simultaneously adjusting the height of the machine to successfully collect wildflower seeds.

Were there any challenges and how did you overcome these?

I had difficulty accessing my National Trust account as it was unfortunately set up incorrectly, this required me to make many phone calls in an office setting. It was stressful adjusting to my new role whilst also contacting several people to solve this problem, after several weeks I was able to resolve the issue.
