Line Manager: Karin Venema (Department Manager for Archaeology and History Faculty Operations)

Pathways Programme: Pathways to Professional Services in Higher Education (2024 cohort)

Organisation Summary: The Faculty Operations team facilitates excellent teaching and research in the Archaeology and History Department, with a specific focus on student recruitment and efficiencies.

How did hosting an intern via the Professional Pathways programme benefit you and your department?

The intern reviewed the online presence and social media for the Department of Archaeology and History. She researched and wrote a report of recommendations, after which she structured, created and scheduled social media posts in a content calendar – forming the basis of our social media strategy from September 2024.

How was your experience of hosting a Pathways intern?

I was pleasantly surprised by how well-matched the student was. I met with her beforehand to discuss mutual expectations, setting out how we would work together. The internship was hybrid: some of the time we spent together in the office, some she worked from home. The intern worked independently and came up with great ideas and suggestions.

Given the Professional Pathways internship is 35 hours in total, how would you recommend ensuring both you and your intern(s) gain as much as possible from the experience?

Discuss mutual expectations, provide information beforehand by email, touch base regularly to ensure all is progressing.
