A team of 37 staff, including apprentices work on the grounds, nursery and outdoor sports facilities throughout the year. The work of the Grounds staff includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>the care of specialist plant collections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>botanical specimen propagation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tree and arboricultural works<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pot and bedding plant production<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>football, hockey, rugby, lacrosse, cricket and tennis playing surface maintenance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>preparing, planting and maintaining plant beds across campus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>indoor plants maintenance service<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>litter management across campus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ensuring roads and major pedestrian areas are gritted when necessary over the winter months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We are responsible for the upkeep of all of the grounds various outdoor environments &#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/about\/gardens\/thegrounds\/ponds\/\">ponds and watercourses<\/a>, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/about\/gardens\/thegrounds\/cherryorchard\/\">cherry orchard,<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/about\/gardens\/biodiversity\/wildflowermeadows\/\">wildflower meadows<\/a>&nbsp;and the wooded areas of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/about\/gardens\/biodiversity\/casestudies\/\">Taddiforde\/Hoopern Valley<\/a>.&nbsp; We take care to protect the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/about\/gardens\/biodiversity\/aboutbiodiversity\/\">biodiversity<\/a>&nbsp;of the campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Name of Employer:&nbsp;<\/strong>Jess Evans&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Job Title:&nbsp;<\/strong>Nursery and Assistant Horticultural Manager<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Internship Scheme used:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/students\/careers\/employer-engagement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Access to Internships<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How did your interns make a positive contribution?&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Joseph picked up what I asked of him quickly and worked using initiative whilst being willing to learn and ask questions. He worked well with the other intern we had on the project and also with other members of the wider team.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Gina picked up tasks quickly that I set for her and was open to learning and using her initiative.
