Summary of Organisation:<\/strong> We are Stamp Out Spiking formed by Dawn Dines, who has twenty years of campaigning experience, to raise awareness of spiking, support victims and get the law updated to safeguard victims and gain more convictions. This legislation is going through the House of Lords this spring.\u00a0 We run as a small independent grass roots charity with part time remote workers. We are very close though and are on Teams and WhatsApp all the time. Dawn has received a variety of awards and accolades for her tireless work being the voice of victims to get the recognition they need from authorities to take these crimes more seriously. We attend universities, festivals, conferences and expos, provide training to those who may encounter victims in their work, such as taxi drivers, train companies, barstaff and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please briefly outline the project\/tasks\/responsibilities you worked on during your Professional Pathways internship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was given full responsibility to create and carry out a fundraising project in collaboration with Stamp Out Spiking Week. I brainstormed different fundraiser ideas and then presented my chosen idea to Jane. Once the idea was chosen, I had to work out the logistics, which included creating a contact list of contributors to reach out to and drafting a series of emails to establish interest and participation in the fundraiser.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also had to create a poster that the sports clubs could send to their members and put up in their venues to increase participation. The fundraiser was a Fight Back Against Spiking, martial arts-themed fundraiser. I created a leaflet that told the clubs who we are and why they should support our cause, drafted social media posts for both the sports clubs’ and Stamp Out Spiking’s pages, and found a suitable webpage to store all the fundraiser information, such as the donation tracker and outreach tracker.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also drafted a follow-up email to the initial fundraiser outreach with more information and logistics, created a Google registration form for the clubs, created a feedback form to be completed after the fundraiser had taken place, and wrote a short promotional paragraph for the newsletter. And much more\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was also able to contribute to other projects that the charity was working on at the time, such as creating a timeline of all their achievements.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How has the Professional Pathways programme helped you in taking the next steps in your career?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Professional Pathways programme has given me much greater clarity about the direction I would like to take my career, while also giving me practical experience and confidence that I can carry forward into the postgraduate job market.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The internship has been particularly valuable in helping me understand what I am passionate about and how I could turn those interests into a career. My internship employer has since got back in touch to ask whether I would be interested in doing further work with them, and there is also the possibility of becoming a trained ambassador for Stamp Out Spiking on campus. Being involved in this active charity work has made me realise how passionate I am about working in this area in the future. As preventing spiking and sexual violence are key interests of mine, the internship has solidified my desire to pursue a career that incorporates my passions for social justice. It has also shown me that there are many different ways I could approach this, such as working as a fundraising coordinator or in campaigning.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the internship, I had only experienced fundraising and campaigning on a relatively small scale. However, after completing the internship, I feel much more confident in my ability to organise larger initiatives. I am now looking forward to applying what I have learnt to organising further fundraisers for the society I am President of, as well as to an additional campaign, Academics Against Assault, which I am currently leading. I have also started researching charities similar to Stamp Out Spiking to explore potential future career opportunities, and I have realised that I am particularly passionate about working alongside strong female leaders within the charity sector.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training element of the programme was equally important in helping me understand the wider range of opportunities available within the charity sector. Before taking part, I was not fully aware of the variety of roles available or which areas might suit my skills and interests. Hearing from different organisations and professionals during the training week gave me a level of clarity that I would not have been able to gain from my degree alone. I now have a much better understanding of how the charity sector operates, the types of roles I could pursue, and where my own skills and interests might fit within it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, completing the presentation at the end of the training week helped me develop my communication and presentation skills and gave me greater confidence in articulating my experiences. I now feel much more prepared to approach job interviews with confidence and to draw on the range of experiences I gained through both the training and internship.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you give to a student who has to complete an internship via remote or hybrid working?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I found it extremely helpful to have an online meeting with my internship provider at the start of every working day. This allowed us to clearly discuss the small tasks I wanted to complete by the end of the day and made sure I had enough work to fill my time. We would then have a follow-up meeting later in the day, where I could bring up any issues that had arisen and talk through my progress so far. This was an ideal working scenario, as it made me feel completely supported and comfortable throughout my remote internship.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the day, I would then send a summary email outlining what I had managed to achieve that day. This gave my employer confidence that I was using my time productively at home, while also allowing me to keep track of what I had completed and how I needed to organise the rest of my time to reach my targets.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think it is really important to have an active relationship with your employer throughout the day, as this helps to mimic the dynamic of an office environment. I also found it helpful to have my employer’s WhatsApp number, as I could easily contact them with any questions that came up rather than feeling like I had to figure everything out on my own. I was able to form a great professional bond with my employer through our two meetings a day and our active email conversations.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, make sure that when the working day comes to an end, you move to a different room, close your laptop and try to switch your brain to something else. It can be hard to separate work from relaxation when you are doing both in the same place, but it is important to distinguish between the two so that you can be as productive as possible during your internship while also giving yourself time to properly switch off afterwards.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
