For the first time in history, the UNGA adopted a human rights treaty, and\nthe crime of genocide was codified under international law.\n'Recognizing that at all periods of history genocide has inflicted great losses on humanity', the\nConvention defines the crime of genocide as a series of acts 'committed with intent to destroy, in whole\nor in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such'. Adopted 'to liberate mankind from such\nan odious scourge', the Genocide Convention made the pledge to enforce the 'Never Again' slogan.\nThe Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)\nThe following day, on 10 December 1948, the UNGA adopted the UDHR, proclaiming the inherent\ndignity of every human person and the fundamental rights which we all possess, equally and universally.\nThe rights enshrined within the UDHR are expressed as the \u2019foundation of freedom, justice and peace\nin the world\u2019, and the UDHR sets out \u2018a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations\u2019\nto which \u2018every individual and every organ of society \u2026 shall strive\u2019.\nThe European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)\n70 years ago, on 3 September 1953, the ECHR entered into force. The ECHR was the first regional\nhuman rights treaty with an unprecedented monitoring mechanism that enabled individuals to bring\nrights claims against states.\nThe rights protected under the ECHR are primarily civil and political rights, and so do not capture the\nfull range of rights within the UDHR. However, the protection afforded by the system is significant and\nthe Court receives and examines thousands of applications every year.\nCall for Posters\nTo mark these Anniversaries, the Human Rights and Democracy Forum and the Exeter Centre for\nInternational Law are organising a poster competition to reflect on two themes\/questions:\nHave the promises and the vision which these documents encapsulate been kept? What have\nwe learned since their adoption and\/or entry into force?\nPosters may focus on one or more of the above-mentioned instruments and must commit to Exeter Law\nSchool\u2019s values of respect, dignity, tolerance, and inclusivity.\nThe posters will be presented on Wednesday 6 December from 12.30pm to 1.30pm in Streatham\nCourt, LT C.\nThe winner of the competition will be awarded a first prize of \u00a350 and the two runners-ups will be\nawarded \u00a325 each. In addition, the three competition winners will receive an award certificate. The\nwinning poster will be displayed on the HRDF website scrolling banner as well as on ECIL website.\nConditions\nThe competition is open to all University of Exeter undergraduate Law students.\nAll visual materials must have copyright clearance: the easiest way is to use materials available\nthrough creative commons.\nPosters need to be one A4 page in size, portrait or landscape format, colour or monochrome, and\ncontain max. 75 words of text. They must be shareable in electronic format, i.e. a pdf file.\nPlease indicate your name(s) on your poster; anonymous posters will be excluded from the competition.\nPosters must be uploaded on the ELE page for the IHRD Workshop and poster competition to the\npadlet on the ELE tile for the poster competition:\nhttps:\/\/ele.exeter.ac.uk\/course\/view.php?id=9957&amp;section=13 before 4pm (UK time) on Monday 20\nNovember 2023.
