Will Ellis – Charity Fundraiser
On the 19th April, Will Ellis and three others will be doing a 45-mile loaded march carrying 32lbs of kit to raise money for the Mark Evison Foundation. The Foundation was set up in 2009 in memory of Lt Mark Evison, an Old Robinite who was tragically killed on patrol in Afghanistan whilst serving with the Welsh Guards regiment. He was known to be a truly inspirational character. An Army report said the following about him:
“An exceptionally impressive young officer. He is bright, positive, fit, robust and charismatic… Importantly he is set apart from his contemporaries because he combines real talent with great humility and charm. He also maintains many interests outside the army and is a talented musician… His soldiers have nicknamed him ‘007’ which, whilst humorous, does indicate their respect for his ability. He cares very deeply for his men and takes great trouble to ensure than they never want for anything”.
The Foundation’s mission is to “promote the personal development of young people through the undertaking of challenges”. They partner with schools in London to help young people to create and plan projects which are personally challenging. Such projects develop “confidence, strength, resilience and breadth, as applicants take independent ownership of something they are keen to do”.
The 32lbs of weight replicates carrying body armour and a rifle, just like Mark did when on patrol in Afghanistan. The march is 15 miles longer than the Royal Marines final commando test, carrying the same weight, so will be a phenomenally tough challenge. However, raising money for such an amazing cause will help me push through!
Your donations can fund projects such as these, making a real difference to people who, without the help of the foundation, would have limited opportunities to finance these projects.

Year 1 module choices – deadline: 1st April
Here is a kind reminder that by 1st April all current year Year 1 LLB and BBL students will have to select one 15-credit Business module for their second year through the Online Module Selection system (OMS). You have four excellent options (although please note that one of them is in term 1 and there is a workload warning attached to it)..
First, BEP2110 Workplace Wellbeing (term 2) focuses on issues such as remote working, physical and mental ill-health, work-life balance, toxic workplace environments, leadership and culture that are critical factors which organisations must be able to manage in order to create positive work spaces. The module is led by Dr Jenny Tunley-Price, a business consultant and educator.
BEP2070 Social Enterprise Management (term 2) will provide you with real-world insights about Social Enterprises (SE). The latter are companies that deliberately aim at balancing their environmental and social goals with financial sustainability. The module is led by Dr Alison Ashby. Invited guest speakers will share their insights and expertise of different SE aspects and by the end of this module, you will receive step by step guidance about how and why to form a Social Enterprise.
BEP2050 Finance for Business (term 2): look at any business page in today’s newspaper, and you will be confronted with an array of finance issues. Companies issue profits warning or think about floating on the stock exchange. But what does all this actually mean? This module introduces you to the key concepts in financial management decisions and finances. This module previously ran in term 1 and was not open to Law & Business students. We are very grateful to David Jessop (Module Convenor) who has not only opened it to you, but also can discuss with you how to prepare for a course without a background in first year accounting.
The final module is BEP2120 Digital Technologies and the Future of Work (term 1). Please note that this module runs in term 1 and that taking it is very likely to overload you since it requires you to take 75 credits in that term instead of the usual 60; academically strong students who have taken an additional module in term 1 have previously struggled a lot. We therefore do not recommend that you take this module without very careful consideration of the workload implications. The module deals with with another topical issue: the potential of the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ to offer creative opportunities for the restructuring of employment practices. This module led by Dr Lisa Harris will explore the factors that influence the impact of change at both macro and micro levels. The module is offered to students across the Penryn and Streatham campuses and – consistently with the focus on technological innovation – most of the teaching and learning takes place on our virtual learning environment, and you will be expected to make regular contributions via online discussions throughout the module.
Lastly, BEP2070 Social Enterprise Management will provide you with real-world insights about Social Enterprises (SE). The latter are companies that deliberately aim at balancing their environmental and social goals with financial sustainability. The module is led by Dr Alison Ashby and will run in Term 2. Invited guest speakers will share their insights and expertise of different SE aspects and by the end of this module, you will receive step by step guidance about how and why to form a Social Enterprise.
