Cornwall Junior Law Division Panellists speak on routes into the legal profession

Panellist from left to right: Tim Walmsley. Chloe-Ann Roberts, Kathryn Whitford and Lexie Williams.

Our students were really fortunate to hear from a number of panellists from a range of backgrounds within the legal profession on Thursday 13th October. Hosted by Camilla Gee and Janet Keliher in a busy DM Lecture A, the panellists spoke on challenges they faced during their legal training and upon entering the legal profession.

We heard from Tim Walmsley, Charted Legal Surveyor and Partner at Stephens Scown; Chloe-Ann Roberts, Trainee Solicitor at Foot Anstey; Kathryn Whitford, Sole Practitioner with over 30 years in the legal profession and Lexie Williams, Apprentice Solicitor at Stephens Scown. They were also joined by Hannah Graham virtually, who is currently a Paralegal at Shoosmiths after recently passing her SQE1.

They all spoke very well, using their experiences to advise a really engaged group of students. After learning about their backgrounds, the students had a number of questions related to the subjects covered by the panellists. After the event, the panel joined the students for a networking opportunity in the Upper Stannary, where the panellists have all said that they were really impressed with how engaged the students were.

Thank you to all of those who attended, the Junior Law Division have said that they would be delighted to work with the university moving forward!

Our Bristol or Exeter based 2 year training contracts will give you the opportunity to have responsibility from day one, exposure to senior partners and learn from the best, the opportunity to make a difference, a chance to grow your career with an ambitious and ever growing law firm. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete a 6 month secondment in our London office if you are interested.

We are looking for people who are going to bring their diversity of thought, challenge our thinking and help us as we continue to have more success.

Summer Vacation Scheme 2023

Our 1 week vacation scheme takes place in either our Bristol or Exeter office and is an opportunity for us to find out more about you, you to find out more about us and to see what life as a Trainee at Michelmores is like. You will spend time in one team for the week which will give you a real hands-on insight into an area of law and life as a trainee. You will attend client meetings and be given ‘real work’.

You will learn about our different departments and areas of work through meeting trainees, partners and lawyers. We run informal lunches which will give you a true insight into working here.

During the week you will take part in a series of assessment exercises, including a group exercise and an article discussion with a partner. You will also have a formal interview with a partner and a member of the graduate recruitment team.

Although we can’t guarantee you a training contract at the end of it, we can guarantee that you will be challenged, have fun and will want to come back as a trainee!

Last year we offered Training Contracts to over 80% of our Vacation Schemers. Our Vacation Scheme is open to 2nd year law students and onwards to apply or 3rd year non law degree students.
