Ideas for Alternative Careers to Law (for Law students)

Wednesday 7th December – 1:30pm to 2:30pm – Virtual Event

Are you at stage where you want to gain ideas of other ways you can use your legal skills and knowledge in careers outside of the legal sector?

If so, this session will help you to do just that. In this one-hour session we will: explore some of the transferable skills your Law degree will equip you with; look at the types of careers outside of Law, previous Law graduates have gone on to do, both from Exeter and nationally; discuss ways you can research these ideas in more detail and how you can gain experience to make informed decisions. We’ll also touch on some of the factors to consider when making career decisions.

This session is online and is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate law students across Streatham and Penryn. Please note the session won’t include break out groups, however we will use Mentimeter for interaction and you will have the opportunity to ask questions at the end.

Disclosing a Disability and Finding a Supportive Employer

Friday 2nd December – 2pm to 3:30pm – Virtual Event

Many people worry about disclosing personal information to potential employers for fear of how this will be perceived. It is your choice whether you should tell an employer that you have a disability, mental health condition, dyslexia, dyspraxia or another neurological or longer-term health condition.

Join Kate Foster (Employability & Careers Consultant), Hannah Abrehart (AccessAbility Adviser) and Jo Blakely ( Mental Health Adviser) In this online workshop where we’ll discuss and explore the following:

Why someone might be nervous about disclosing?

Do you have to disclose a disability?

What are the benefits of disclosing?

What is the best way to approach disclosing?

When is the best time to disclose a disability?

We recognise that this is a sensitive topic, so the session won’t be recorded and shared with others as we want it to be a safe and confidential space for all participants.

You’ll also have the opportunity to complete a 6 month secondment in our London office if you are interested.

We are looking for people who are going to bring their diversity of thought, challenge our thinking and help us as we continue to have more success.

Summer Vacation Scheme 2023

Our 1 week vacation scheme takes place in either our Bristol or Exeter office and is an opportunity for us to find out more about you, you to find out more about us and to see what life as a Trainee at Michelmores is like. You will spend time in one team for the week which will give you a real hands-on insight into an area of law and life as a trainee. You will attend client meetings and be given ‘real work’.

You will learn about our different departments and areas of work through meeting trainees, partners and lawyers. We run informal lunches which will give you a true insight into working here.

During the week you will take part in a series of assessment exercises, including a group exercise and an article discussion with a partner. You will also have a formal interview with a partner and a member of the graduate recruitment team.

Although we can’t guarantee you a training contract at the end of it, we can guarantee that you will be challenged, have fun and will want to come back as a trainee!

Last year we offered Training Contracts to over 80% of our Vacation Schemers. Our Vacation Scheme is open to 2nd year law students and onwards to apply or 3rd year non law degree students.
