Learning Anglo-French

Edward Mills

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Edward completed his PhD at the University of Exeter in 2021, and a monograph based on his doctoral research, provisionally titled Language, Learning, and the French of Medieval England, will appear in early 2027.

As part of the LAF project, Edward is leading on the archival research that is central to identifying un- and under-explored witnesses to French instruction in medieval Britain. He will also be involved in shaping the form and functionality of the database into which his findings will be entered. He has worked extensively on the specific curriculum and teaching environment of the so-called ‘Oxford dictatores‘ in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, with his edition and translation of the model letters in two dictatores manuscripts (British Library, MS Harley 4971 and Harley 3988) in the late stages of preparation.

Prior to his appointment, Edward had been Postdoctoral Research Associate on the ‘Learning French in Medieval England‘ project. He has since worked as Lecturer in French and Lecturer in Medieval Studies in the Department of Languages, Culture and Visual Studies and the Department of Archaeology and History at Exeter.
