Edward Mills

Postdoctoral Research Fellow


Edward Mills is one of two Postdoctoral Research Fellows attached to the project (along with Sean Doherty). Edward completed his PhD at the University of Exeter in 2021, and a monograph based on his doctoral research, provisionally titledĀ Language, Learning, and the French of Medieval England, is in preparation. Edward has also published inĀ Medium Ɔvum, with forthcoming articles and chapters due in 2024 in Routledge’sĀ A Cultural History of TranslationĀ series,Ā the journalĀ Historical Research, and the collaborative volume Towards an Inclusive Academy: Perspectives from Disabled MedievalistsĀ (Michigan University Press).

As part of the LAF project, Edward will lead on the archival research that is central to identifying un- and under-explored witnesses to French instruction in medieval Britain, sharing editing responsibilities with Thomas Hinton. He will also be involved in shaping the form and functionality of the database into which his findings will be entered.

Prior to his appointment, Edward had been Postdoctoral Research Associate on the ‘Learning French in Medieval England‘ project. He has since worked as Lecturer in French and Lecturer in Medieval Studies in the Department of Languages, Culture and Visual Studies and the Department of Archaeology and History at Exeter.
