The Centre for Magic and Esotericism at the University of Exeter was delighted to host the 2024 Conference of the European Network of Islam and Esotericism. This year’s theme was ‘dreams and visions in Islam’.

    Emily Selove opening the conference

Drawing on recent scholarship on dreams, dreaming, and visions which employ distinct historical frameworks and comparative approaches, the conference drew together scholars from nearly a dozen countries. We considered theoretically as well as “textually” new approaches and paradigms for provocative and occluded aspects within the esoteric traditions of Islam, whether from cultural studies, film and media studies, anthropology, philosophy, religious studies, or history.

You can read the full programme here. Papers presented during this conference addressed themes and related topics including:
o Dreams in the Qur’an and hadith and their commentaries
o Dreaming and visions in Sufi literature and thought
o The interpretation of dreams and visions
o The status of dreams and visions as sources of wisdom and
    knowledge
o The relationship between prophecy and dreams/visions
o The use of dreams and visions in ritual magic
o The realm of dreams as a borderland across which meanings are
    conveyed
o Categorisation and hierarchies of dreams and dreamers
o The power of dreams to affect waking life, including healing
    dream
