{"id":1151,"date":"2024-09-12T13:50:27","date_gmt":"2024-09-12T13:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/magic\/?p=1151"},"modified":"2024-09-12T13:51:50","modified_gmt":"2024-09-12T13:51:50","slug":"anne-jackson-the-witchcraft-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/magic\/2024\/09\/12\/anne-jackson-the-witchcraft-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Anne Jackson: The Witchcraft Series"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Honiton<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelmahulbert.com\/?q=exhibitions\/anne-jackson-witchcraft-series\">https:\/\/www.thelmahulbert.com\/?q=exhibitions\/anne-jackson-witchcraft-series<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Witchcraft Series explores the history of witch trials and the power of \u2018the witch\u2019 in our culture, both as metaphor for our fears, and as representation of social injustice towards women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tapestries often depict the trials of specific historic \u201cwitches\u201d from the West Country, especially Somerset and Devon, illustrating their tales with images of spells, witches\u2019 familiars and magic symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anne Jackson uses historical texts and original illustrations, along with contemporary scientific and cultural references, to memorialise individual women, and comment on ways we try to exert control over our world and our own lives. Her medium, a textile art form called knotted tapestry, uses cotton, linen and synthetic yarns to create vivid, intensely-coloured imagery.<br>&nbsp;<br>\u2018My work is concerned with breaking out of the convention which associates textiles and woven tapestry with a sense of cosiness and comfort, using elements of irony, and even humour.
