{"id":61,"date":"2024-07-08T16:22:33","date_gmt":"2024-07-08T16:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/mathsblog\/?page_id=61"},"modified":"2025-01-30T13:44:02","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T13:44:02","slug":"david-rees-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/mathslocal\/david-rees-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"David Rees Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>David Rees Distinguished Visiting Fellowship<\/strong> scheme enables mathematicians of international renown to spend a few days at the University of Exeter to enable them to contribute to the University\u2019s academic and intellectual activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Rees (1918-2013) was a Professor of Mathematics and former Head of Department at the University of Exeter. He had a long and distinguished research career in semigroup theory and commutative algebra. During the Second World War was actively undertaking Enigma research at Bletchley Park; after this he reached the highest international levels of mathematical research, being appointed Fellow of the <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsociety.org\/\">Royal Society (FRS)<\/a> and of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ima.org.uk\/\">Institute of Mathematics and Applications (FIMA)<\/a>. He was awarded the P\u00f3lya Prize of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lms.ac.uk\/\">London Mathematical Society<\/a> in 1993.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key responsibilities of David Rees Fellows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">During their period visiting the Department, Fellows will:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>present a colloquium\/public lecture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>present a specialist research seminar&nbsp;on a topic aligned to their research interests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be engaged in research with members of the staff from the mathematics discipline<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current and Previous Rees Fellows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>2025: Prof Chris Budd, University of Bath, UK<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2023: Prof Seonhee Lim, Seoul National University, Korea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2022: Prof Jon Keating, University of Oxford, UK<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2019: Prof James V.
