{"id":1300,"date":"2018-12-29T12:36:17","date_gmt":"2018-12-29T12:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/?p=1300"},"modified":"2024-08-03T12:57:11","modified_gmt":"2024-08-03T12:57:11","slug":"research-postcard-an-exeter-life-of-thomas-becket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/2018\/12\/29\/research-postcard-an-exeter-life-of-thomas-becket\/","title":{"rendered":"An Exeter Life of Thomas Becket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Grandisson\">John Grandisson<\/a>, the bishop who presided at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter-cathedral.org.uk\/\">Exeter <\/a>in the turbulent middle years of the fourteenth century &#8211; the age of the papacy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avignon_Papacy\">Avignon exile<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Death\">Black Death<\/a> and the bloodiest battles of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hundred_Years%27_War\">Hundred Years War<\/a> \u2013 has long been celebrated as a man of learning whose love of books brought some of the finest illuminated manuscripts into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exeter-cathedral.org.uk\/history-heritage\/library-archives\/\">Cathedral Library<\/a>. He left his mark \u2013 that is to say, his ownership inscription and many marginal notes, underlines, comments and corrections \u2013 on a wide variety of books, including those still at Exeter.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1301\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2018\/12\/Grandisson_Coat_of_Arms_in_Grandisson_Psalter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1301\" class=\"wp-image-1301 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2018\/12\/Grandisson_Coat_of_Arms_in_Grandisson_Psalter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grandisson&#8217;s family arms as the frontispiece to his psalter<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yet surprisingly there is only one text that is attributed to him as his own work. Oxford, <a href=\"https:\/\/medieval.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/\">Bodleian Library<\/a> MS 493 (fos. 1r-50v) contains a Latin life of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Becket\">Thomas Becket<\/a> which is described in its original red-ink rubric as having been curated usefully and historically (compendiose et historice\u2026collette) by John de Grandisson, bishop of Exon. Arranged in four parts, the text narrates the martyr\u2019s progress from birth to death and canonisation, from the city of London which he honoured (decoravit) as his family home, to his final reward from Pope Alexander III of his name being added to the catalogue of martyrs (martyrum cathologo addendum decrevit), after which his feast was always celebrated. As the colophon acknowledges, the life is not an original composition. The text is founded on the <em>Quadrilogus<\/em>, the composite life of the archbishop first compiled by Brother E \u2013 his name may have been Elias &#8211; a monk of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Evesham_Abbey\">Benedictine abbey of Evesham<\/a>, which attempted at a synthesis of the accounts of Becket\u2019s chapter colleagues at Canterbury, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_of_Canterbury\">William<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_of_Tewkesbury\">Alan of Tewkesbury<\/a>, and his friends, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herbert_of_Bosham\">Herbert of Bosham<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_of_Salisbury\">John of Salisbury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1303\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2018\/12\/Becket-boss.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1303\" class=\"wp-image-1303 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2018\/12\/Becket-boss-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2018\/12\/Becket-boss-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2018\/12\/Becket-boss-768x527.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2018\/12\/Becket-boss.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Becket&#8217;s murder as depicted in a ceiling boss at Exeter Cathedral<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The cult of saints was the meeting-point of Grandisson\u2019s interests as a prelate and a scholar: it was a means of stability and spiritual nourishment for the faithful facing the uncertainty of present times; for church and clergy it was a link with an illustrious past and a source of inspiration. Perhaps his greatest gift to his cathedral was a vast, two-volume <a href=\"http:\/\/mlgb3.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/mlgb\/book\/2697\/?search_term=grandison&amp;page_size=All\">Legendary<\/a> which drew together the narratives for the feasts celebrated throughout the year. His Becket life appears to have been an early step towards this project, possibly compiled in his first decade at Exeter, or even before. Surely Grandisson first turned his attention to Becket because of his place in the history of the church in England but at Exeter he can scarcely have been unaware of the special resonance of the story in the western diocese. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_de_Tracy\">William de Tracy<\/a>, one of the four assassins of the archbishop, was baron of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bradninch\">Bradninch<\/a> and lord of the manor of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moretonhampstead\">Moretonhampstead<\/a>. His Devon lands were the focus of his penitential gift to the monks of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.british-history.ac.uk\/vch\/kent\/vol2\/pp113-121\">Christ Church, Canterbury<\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moorthanmeetstheeye.org\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0004\/656509\/The-manor-of-Doccombe-and-its-Canterbury-Overlords_B-Hardiman.pdf\">Doccombe<\/a> and adjoining lands to the value of 100s were presented to the Cathedral Priory in <em>c<\/em>. 1173. He requested commemorative masses for himself and for the new saint he had inadvertently created.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">James
