{"id":1589,"date":"2019-10-16T15:43:33","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T15:43:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/?p=1589"},"modified":"2019-10-16T15:43:33","modified_gmt":"2019-10-16T15:43:33","slug":"750th-anniversary-at-westminster-abbey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/2019\/10\/16\/750th-anniversary-at-westminster-abbey\/","title":{"rendered":"750th Anniversary at Westminster Abbey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week marks the 750th anniversary of the last translation of the relics of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_the_Confessor\">Edward the Confessor<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Westminster_Abbey\">Westminster Abbey<\/a>, in 1269, to the new shrine created at the direction of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_III_of_England\">Henry III<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1595\" style=\"width: 272px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2019\/10\/a4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1595\" class=\"wp-image-1595 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2019\/10\/a4-272x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2019\/10\/a4-272x300.jpg 272w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2019\/10\/a4.jpg 521w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 272px) 100vw, 272px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1595\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Confessor&#8217;s shrine at Westminster Abbey<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The new shrine was the centrepiece of the scheme for the elaboration and beautification of the abbey church in which King Henry had invested for more than twenty-five years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1594\" style=\"width: 186px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2019\/10\/images.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1594\" class=\"wp-image-1594 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2019\/10\/images.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1594\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henry III, as depicted by Matthew Paris<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The ceremony, conducted on the liturgical feast of the translation, 13 October, drew only modest attention in contemporary annals, although the compiler of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flores_Historiarum\"><em>Flores historiarum<\/em><\/a> reported the immediate cure of two supplicants at the shrine, Benedict, a clerk of Winchester, and John, an Irish layman, suffering from diabolical possession.<\/p>\n<p>On 15 October 2019, the Dean &amp; Chapter of Westminster led a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster-abbey.org\/abbey-news\/750th-anniversary\">commemorative service<\/a> in the presence of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elizabeth_II\">Her Majesty the Queen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2019\/10\/images-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1593 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2019\/10\/images-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2019\/10\/download-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1592 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2019\/10\/download-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Artefacts of the Abbey&#8217;s medieval history, an early witness to the Confessor&#8217;s foundation charter, and the magnificent illuminated <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Missal\">Missal<\/a> of the fourteenth-century abbot, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster-abbey.org\/abbey-commemorations\/commemorations\/nicholas-litlyngton\">Nicholas Litlyngton<\/a>\u00a0(1362-1386) were processed through the nave to the chancel steps for display at the High Altar.
