I have a lot of people in my life who are trans and non-binary, and I felt it was a part of the field that was important to contribute to. I did my MA thesis on relationships between humans and demons in the Middle Ages, and to examine demons and gender felt a natural extension of that. The saints were a useful vehicle for this thanks to their relationship with the satanic, and I got going from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" id=\"block-5c543a15-682d-4a94-9288-41ce209b72b1\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-0c3a8823-4344-47d6-ab65-aa6bbc346dc4\">What kinds of sources do you use in your research?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-376d8706-8ae9-4a9f-891d-8533bdb185f8\">The <em>Golden Legend<\/em> is a key source for me, as well as other versions of the saints&#8217; lives. The <em>Golden Legend<\/em> is a mid-thirteenth-century collection of saints\u2019 lives written by Jacobus de Voragine, intended to assist preachers by providing exempla for sermons. Scholars consider it one of the most popular texts of the later Middle Ages, the <em>Golden Legend<\/em> being a nickname due to its popularity. In addition to that, Caesarius of Heisterbach&#8217;s <em>Dialogue on Miracles<\/em> is a key source for me, as are theological works like Peter Lombard&#8217;s Sentences and Thomas Aquinas&#8217; <em>Summa Theologiae<\/em>. In terms of images, I&#8217;ve done some close work with a few of the Anglo-Norman Apocalypses and their representations of St Michael Archangel: the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/digital.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/objects\/31dcbc95-b922-4d66-8c83-e01e9300afe5\/surfaces\/484c57ca-f4b0-4a3c-83dc-1c65f91ae44b\/\">Bodleian Apocalypse<\/a><\/em>, the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/images.lambethpalacelibrary.org.uk\/luna\/servlet\/detail\/LPLIBLPL~17~17~1283~133077?qvq=q%3A%3D%22APOCALYPSE%20(Lambeth%20Apocalypse)%22%3Blc%3ALPLIB~2~2%2CLPLIBLPL~9~9%2CLPLIBLPL~12~12%2CLPLIBLPL~17~17%2CLPLIBLPL~31~31%2CLPLIBLPL~23~23%2CLPLIB~1~1%2CLPLIBLPL~21~21%2CLPLIBLPL~19~19%2CLPLIBLPL~34~34%2CLPLIBLPL~24~24%2CLPLIBLPL~20~20%2CLPLIBLPL~32~32%2CLPLIBLPL~29~29&amp;mi=10&amp;trs=207\">Lambeth Apocalypse<\/a><\/em>, and the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/digital.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/objects\/800ee953-8af1-4b97-9a12-9d179331d3a8\/surfaces\/52a0f162-5a8f-48d7-99c7-fc0c1232a81a\/\">Douce Apocalypse<\/a><\/em>, for instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" id=\"block-5c46e122-1f84-407b-882e-964070044f9b\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-b00c4c15-1f3a-4806-b8dc-8f9f6904f539\">What does a typical day look like for you?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-d5c0740f-cb3b-4072-9c6a-7657b91d3f85\">At the moment I&#8217;m in the redrafting stage, so my typical day is usually me redrafting the chapter I&#8217;m on, using the previous draft and comments against the new draft so I can see where I need to change as I go. I do, of course, try to take breaks, too, such as to go for a walk or play with my cat, Wilfred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"856\" data-id=\"3425\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2024\/07\/Wilfred-1024x856.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2024\/07\/Wilfred-1024x856.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2024\/07\/Wilfred-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2024\/07\/Wilfred-768x642.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/medievalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/339\/2024\/07\/Wilfred.jpg 1463w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" id=\"block-c9b7d457-59e4-4747-ac15-2aba02fe4b13\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-f3d84f8e-d743-4fc1-b5e4-c5f881e4266d\">Can you share one interesting thing that you&#8217;ve discovered or learned during your research?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-db98afce-3bb0-463b-8fe5-ae29250cb476\">In medieval illustration and illumination, the soul is most commonly depicted as looking distinctly human-like (though not distinctly gendered). Souls weren\u2019t always conceived of in this form, though, and in some texts we find examples of the \u2018circular soul\u2019, where the soul is described as a sphere or circle. While some scholars have suggested descriptions of the circular\/spherical soul appear mostly in Cistercian sources in this period, I think there is also an element of it in some of the Franciscan lives of Francis, such as Bonaventure\u2019s <em>Legenda Maior<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" id=\"block-313fcd91-eb12-440d-ab02-301c8a9c3ae0\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-8b7f37ed-1530-4c03-8592-1c554cade0b0\">Do you have any advice for someone considering doing a PhD in medieval studies?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-854194c2-6429-46d7-a112-8b186a20a2db\">You absolutely don&#8217;t have to have perfect Latin to do a medieval PhD!
