{"id":107,"date":"2023-10-09T10:42:26","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T10:42:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/multidefence\/?page_id=107"},"modified":"2023-12-13T09:58:17","modified_gmt":"2023-12-13T09:58:17","slug":"prof-stineke-van-houte-university-of-exeter","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/multidefence\/prof-stineke-van-houte-university-of-exeter\/","title":{"rendered":"Prof Stineke Van Houte, University of Exeter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/multidefence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/235\/2023\/09\/Stineke.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/multidefence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/235\/2023\/09\/Stineke.webp 300w, https:\/\/sites.exeter.ac.uk\/multidefence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/235\/2023\/09\/Stineke-150x150.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Stineke (she\/her) is a BBSRC Future Leader Fellow in the Department of Biosciences at the <a href=\"https:\/\/biosciences.exeter.ac.uk\/staff\/profile\/index.php?web_id=Christina_Van_Houte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Exeter<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has a broad interest in host-parasite interactions, and has worked on various different model systems to tackle questions that are broadly&nbsp;related to how parasites manipulate their hosts (from behaviour to immune responses), and how &nbsp;hosts counteracts these processes.&nbsp;For her PhD, she worked on behavioural manipulation of insects by baculoviruses, while shifting to&nbsp;bacteria and their viruses (phages) as a model system for host-parasite interactions for her postdoc.&nbsp;Among&nbsp;other things, she has studied if, how and&nbsp;when bacteria&nbsp;use&nbsp;an&nbsp;adaptive immune response (CRISPR-Cas) to&nbsp;defend themselves against phages. More recently she studies how phages manage to counteract the CRISPR-Cas immune response in bacterial hosts.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vanhoutelab.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Her lab<\/a>&nbsp;currently focuses on how they can use CRISPR-Cas systems to alter microbial communities, with a particular focus on removing antimicrobial resistance genes from these communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stineke (she\/her) is a BBSRC Future Leader Fellow in the Department of Biosciences at the University of Exeter.
